    supermarket lines

I disagree. Since returning to Argentina I've had the best and the worst service, in different areas. -- Good service when the attendant fills up my car with gas and cleans all windows, unasked and without waiting for a tip. -- Good service when the local bakery delivers half a dozen...

    If Not Argentina Then Where?

On a US$14,000 per year retirement, I'd be afraid to get out of the dollar zone - the currency risk is too great. Smallish US towns can be inexpensive and pleasant places to live. Lander, Wyoming, is one that comes to mind. Same for Fort Collins, CO.

    supermarket lines

Instead of just venting, why not try to find a way around those lines? 1- Do as JP suggests, and avoid supermarkets altogether - specialty stores have much better merchandise 2- Ask the supermarket cashier what's the best time to shop - I did, and there are never more than two people ahead of...

    Cheap Flights EZE - Chicago

For trips originating in Argentina, local travel agencies often have better fares than places like Orbitz, etc.

Suggestions on top Univ. in Bs As

Argentina's leading newspaper, La Nacion, has a four-year journalism program. As for universities, apart from the UBA the best one is San Andres, followed by the Universidad Catolica Argentina and El Salvador University. The Universidad de Belgrano is a step below those.

    Just one more crisis

Those who read Clarin and La Nacion know that a "B-" bond rating is nothing to crow about - it means Highly Speculative. And yes, people do indeed deserve better than the string of self-serving lies this government feeds them. Only one more year now...!

    Dollars from ATMs

ATMs give dollars ONLY from Argentine banks' dollar accounts - not from foreign accounts.

Thanks for the clarification fedecc - Marksoc is even sillier than I originally thought, and that's saying a lot.

    Just one more crisis

This guy is a joke. He pontificates about the future of the US, China, Europe, and Brazil, but he can't even get Menem's name right... That's what happens to people who view La Nacion and Clarin as something to wrap fish in - they stay ignorant. :D:D:D

    Just one more crisis

Hadn't thought about the loss of status - it's an interesting point. We did not encounter discrimination in the US, perhaps because we were not dark-skinned. Whenever I said I was Argentine I was told the same thing: "But you don't LOOK Argentinian..."). In the East Coast, at least...

    Just one more crisis

It is true that many leave, but my question is: why so many who could leave elect to stay? There are many cases like the ones Sergio talks about. Yet there are others who have dual citizenship (generally European, sometimes American) and the means to live off their investments, who still...

    Just one more crisis

Good to know the trickle-down effect is working in Chile, and institutions are being strengthened instead of weakened, as is the case here. Chileans do know how to pick their leaders - every time I see a picture of "our" Cristina standing next to their dignified Michele Bachelet I cringe and...

    We are Pirates

Got it almost right this time, Lucas, with just one minor error: "The elite oligarchy" currently ruling the country is named Kirchner. They don't serve foreign powers but concentrate instead on serving their "own personal and individual interest, relegating the country's own to a distant...

    Uruguay residency anyone?

I have homes in both countries and find Uruguay far more expensive. The upkeep of my Colonia place is 45% higher than what I pay for a far more comfortable home in San Isidro. And I'm comparing RURAL versus BIG CITY prices - costs in a similar location in Argentina would be about 60% lower...

    Just one more crisis

Per capita figures are largely meaningless, as they are easily distorted by a small group of extremely wealthy types. The mean is a far more reliable measure, with 50% of the population above and 50% below it. But thanks for the link - I'll check it out. As I said, I know nothing about...

    We are Pirates

That "freezing collection of rocks" happens to be in the middle of some very promising oilfields. Whoever controls the islands controls the oil - it's that simple. But ever since I remember, every time the military rulers got in trouble some kind of threat to our "soberania" was trumpeted in...

    Just one more crisis

I hear from friends and relatives who live in Brazil that conditions there are not that good: income inequality is worse than here, and crime in Sao Paulo and Rio much higher. This is just anecdotal evidence - does anyone have any figures? The economy is booming, however, so they are obviously...

    Just one more crisis

Well said, Citygirl. But in practical terms, how would you go about improving all the things you see wrong? Entering politics? Where do you start? How do you change the mindset of people brought up for generations to see the government as their enemy, and distrust everyone but their own...
