Violent protests in Chile: Will this spread to Argentina?

So if I'm reading this correctly, it would take a low-income Chilean 180 years to reach the (current?) mean income level in their country, assuming a generation is 30 years?

    I'm new on this site

Hi Kev, If you like it here, I think it is a good move no matter your age or work status. As Iz suggests, you just have to figure out how to make things work for your specific situation. The one thing I do suggest (if you don't already) is to learn Spanish. Your life will become much richer and...

How Argentina Embarked on the Road to Ruin

I think this is true for most countries, not just Latin / South America or "communist" countries, it just appears in different shapes and forms. Politicians become more entrenched and detached from the real world (Chile is an excellent current example, not only Piñera but the entire political...

Mochi bean cakes in Buenos Aires?

Does anyone know of a specific place in Chinatown (or anywhere else in Baires) that sells mochi? Those are the rice cakes filled with different types of bean paste. I thought with the Chinese New Year just around the corner they would be popular - if they're not already a standard item in some...

How Argentina Embarked on the Road to Ruin

Nice article, thank you. It's interesting to look at countries with seemingly equal potential and see the different paths they've followed.

Overnight fee to be charged to foreign tourists

Ran across this yesterday: https://www.forbes.com/sites/morgansimon/2020/01/06/how-much-does-a-dollar-really-cost/amp/ Not so much about the tourist tax, but rather how difficult it can be for visitors here who really want to spend money to do so.

Amazon Presses the Brake on Argie US$800MM Investment?

It is a shame to watch Argentina (a great country with a lot of good people) lose so much business to Brazil and Uruguay for no good reason https://en.mercopress.com/2020/01/07/pompeo-and-uruguay-president-elect-lacalle-pou-look-forward-to-a-closer-partnership Also ran across this last night...

Thoughts on Fernandez, IMF, Morales, and Argentine politics?

Why do you say the "fault of the IMF and the U.S."? I am not arguing, but my thinking is it takes two (or more) sides to make a deal. So, what do you see to direct fault to one of the parties?

Thoughts on Fernandez, IMF, Morales, and Argentine politics?

In the back of my mind I was thinking about the exact scenario you describe. Thank you also for the Argentine history; I knew about the U.S. in Central America but wasn't aware that Argentina intervened.

Thoughts on Fernandez, IMF, Morales, and Argentine politics?

I've been watching this situation develop since October and am surprised that Fernandez isn't more pragmatic in dealing with the different players involved. This isn't a comment about whether or not Morales should be in Argentina. However, I could see the problem Fernandez was creating for...

Violent protests in Chile: Will this spread to Argentina?

Very interesting, I had not heard "the rich" part before. I guess that is similar to when Piñera's wife said, shortly after the protests began, that they have to 'begin sharing their privileges' with the rest of the Chileans. That statement illustrates the mindset the controlling families have!

Violent protests in Chile: Will this spread to Argentina?

I think that's exactly what Piñera was trying to say early on, when he said Chile was under attack. Unfortunately his public speaking skills leave a lot to be desired, so it was interpreted as the Chilean people being the enemy. Over the weekend I noticed he said the worst of the rioting is...

Violent protests in Chile: Will this spread to Argentina?

I agree with Rich. Costanera Mall is not dangerous, but there is still the annoyance of impromptu "student" flash mobs. I am not a big shopper, but probably Alto Los Condes is a better option for a mall, and Los Condes to stay as well.

Violent protests in Chile: Will this spread to Argentina?

I am currently in Santiago as well, arrived October 1 and returning to BA next week. So, I have been here before, during, and unfortunately not after the protests/destruction because they still continue, although the media for the most part is not reporting them any more. I've actually...
