It is a LATAM thing. And then we blame colonialism, the rich countries, the IMF, the Sith lords or whatever else is convenient at the time. Outsiders have a hard time understanding it. It is just the way we are.

Reporting From Santiago Chile

1. After 2 months of disturbances, the balance is:
2. Several Walmart Markets badly burnt , will not be rebuilt all in lower income Neighbourhoods
3. 80 Damaged traffic lights
4. Burnt pharmacies in low income areas
5. Damaged ATM and banks in those areas
6. In downtown area Plaza Italia where massive meetings are held, hotels have no guests
7. Over 100,000 fired due to burnt workplaces or lack of business
8. No damages in plush areas of the city! life as usual.
9. The subway system is over 85% operative.

After all the destruction, loss of lives and injured people. Plus damaged economy 3,4 % less activity. The major gains obtained by the protesters will be a referendum to be held in April 2020 to decide if the constitution should be changed/Amended.?

Yesterday, Rail workers protesting for a 2,8 % Salary Increase per year...!!! for lower wages and 1,4 % for higher wages.

A survey by a large University asked from students and employees for the underlying causes for the social malaise that produced the Uprising and destruction..The results gathered were as follows higher to lower number of responses.

1. The Concentration of Wealth
2. Corruption
3. Crime
4. Unequal Liberal Development Model
5. Segregation of Social Classes
6. Low Participation of Labor in Politics
7. Less dignified treatment of Individuals

No mention of Wages, Pensions, Student Loans, Health services, Free Education,??

I am currently in Santiago as well, arrived October 1 and returning to BA next week. So, I have been here before, during, and unfortunately not after the protests/destruction because they still continue, although the media for the most part is not reporting them any more.

When I speak with Chilenos, they say the most shocking thing is that the country for all intents and purposes has a president in name only, and has no leadership. It is very sad to watch.

Finally there is LIGHT at the end of the tunnel , the Corrupt Politicians on both sides, have made the angry MOB believe that the real culprit is the Pinochet 1980 Constitution. Therefore a New Constitution would solve all the Problems..!! they have set a Schedule for a referendum in April 2020 to decide if a New Constitution is needed then decide if Congressmen should write the New constitution and appoint the Body to write the Text Then a Referendum to Approve the Text. Therefore a New Constitution will presumably come out in 2022...!

A set-up by Politicians to play the "Trump" card , All the past destruction, injury, damage, lost ives and jobs for nothing ... will the Mobs continue to tolerate to be wronged by the highly paid Politicians ..! Maybe .

Life is coming back to normal except for Friday evenings where youngsters go downtown Santiago, to play cat an mouse with the Carabineros and Hydrant vehicles..! To no avail..!

A friend who spent two years working in Chile says that over there, only those with a German or Basque last name have a chance to make it into the upper class. ?

Maybe true, such a General statement ..! to discuss the different immigration currents of the XIX th. Century in Chile and the impact on present society would require a treatise .
Moreover those with Basque and German last names , most likely are in the Upper class! ABC1 . Which Upper class?

My friend was referring to memberships in the best private clubs, the elite schools, etc.
That's where networking starts, and in Chile networking is all. Who your parents are, who are you related to, whom did your siblings and cousins marry, which school did you go to, etc.

Access was fenced-off from the start, and people outside those groups had much of a chance of being accepted into the upper class, whatever that may be.

Something similar happens in Argentina. No matter how much money people make, even nowadays membership in the Jockey Club is restricted to the privileged few. Landed gentry, for the most part.
