Can one recommend a gift that I can bring from here that represents BA for a lady in her early fifties. BTW: she has very good taste.

If she's not Latin American, try H. Stern (the Brazilian equivalent of Tiffany's), at the head of Florida. Nice things, not so expensive as they'd be in the States, let alone in Britain.

cujodu - where do you recommend I buy alfajores that I can throw in a suitcase?

There are 400,000 "Havanna" chains where the alfajores come in boxes. THey even sell Havanna alfajores at the airport.

Alfajores are sweetcakes, TJ. Some look a bit like "moon pies", others don't.

Jewelry is always the best bet.

Alfajores could result in disaster...and perhaps a lot of pain...for you.

How much you spend is actually secondary to how well you can match her taste.

Believe me on this one.

If you don't get it, watch BOTH of these movies:

The Family Man (1999)

Two For The Road (1966)

Then you're on your own.

These films may appear to be antithetical, but they aren't.

Trust me on this one.

PS: DO NOT WATCH "THE MAN WHO UNDERSTOOD WOMEN"

(He didn't.)

Can you imagine returning from a foreign country and giving a woman a box of cookies?

Not even a box, at that...just a foil package.

Of course the retribution from a non-Argentine (disappointed) woman is likely to be less severe.
