Hi I think I have a back injury and would like to know if anyone has a recommendation for a good place to get an MRI in Buenos Aires, and what I might expect to have to pay for this.

Also can anyone recommend a good orthopedist or doctor who treats spinal injuries.

Many thanks!

Dr. Alcalá at hospital alemán. Surgeon.
There is a chinese doctor on accupunture. He is on Riobamba between Corrientes and Sarmiento. He is good on pain control. He made me walk again.
There is also a McKenzie institut here, they might fix you without surgery.

Thanks! I definitely don't want surgery. Any idea on what an MRI might cost me though?

A year ago I had an MRI in Montegrande (Clínica Montegrande, south of BsAs) and it was only 600 pesos, but that was very, very cheap. In the city, a year ago, I was quoted around 1200 (I didn't have insurance then) so it is probably more now. I saw a spinal specialist at the Hospital Italiano, he was OK but I don't remember his name. The Hospital Italiano has a Guardia de Traumotología in Belgrano, they saw me very quickly (it was polo related, from your user name I am guessing maybe yours is too?)

The fastest is usually to go to one of those imaging centers, like Enrique Rossi, and then take those images to the doctor.

Thanks Noruega I'll google Enrique Rossi to check it out. And no my injury is unrelated and something I've been trying to avoid but I think I need to get it checked out now.
By the way how does health insurance work in Argentina? Can you get it on a tourist visa, and about how much is it per month? I'm young and healthy if that makes any difference.

Yes.
Hospital Alemán.
1000 per month.

Bajo cero thanks...by the way can you tell me what this refers to? Is it pesos per month for health insurance at the Hospital Aleman? Also, do you know about how much a high-quality (if such a thing exists) MRI might cost me in BsAs?

Hi PoloStar, I think you should check out the Medicus plans through Expat Connection: http://www.expat-connection.com/localins

Their cheapest plan is ARS 620 per month and should be good for your needs. (I decided to go for Swiss Medical after some research, some people say Medicus is bad at the paperwork part of it. OSDE is the top of the line, but quite expensive.)

And yes, for most health insurance plans you can sign up with just your passport and most accept payments in cash (interestingly, OSDE does not.)

Sorry, this is incorrect. I have been insured with OSDE since April. I signed up with my passport and I pay each month in cash at any Rapipago point.

Hi Sher, it is great if it is incorrect, but when I went to inquiry about a month ago (at their office in Once) they were fine with just the passport but she said that they didn't accept cash, and that I should ask a friend with a bank account here to do the transfers for me. Maybe that was specific to that office? Or maybe I got it wrong, which is quite possible. :) Definitely makes it a lot easier for those of us without local bank accounts when we can pay in cash!
