Idioms are one thing contractions something else... like jermu, boga, capelu, Chabomba, bolonki, etc.

those are not really idioms! It's slang.

Well, this thread has been informative. I've heard "viento en popa" a lot... but I always understood it as "viento en pompa" - conjuring images of "con el culo al aire." My husband just set me straight. Thank goodness I never used that in public.
