Back Again: First Impressions

Talking of American, on a recent journey MIa -EZE ( mid 2014)

I clearly remember some Argentines talking to the airhostesses early in the morning in Spanish. And the air hostess had the audacity to tell them in English :-

"What were you doing in USA if you can not speak Spanish. And wake up now..how much you want to sleep"

On the other hand, I had an equally insane experience with an Argie stewardess. My wife and I boarded the Buequebus Ferry to Colonia. First we had a snack and hung out in the snack bar. Then we went looking for seats. We came upon two empty seats with empty coffee cups on the tray tables. We sat down and soon an angry Arg woman approached us and demanded that we get out of HER seats. I said that she shouldn't have left the seats empty but there were other empty seats nearby, she should take one. She said that we should have recognized the empty coffee cups as a sign that she was returning and that we stole HER seats and she wanted them back. She stood in the aisle yelling at us for maybe 15 minutes while people around her laughed at her and made faces behind her back. Then she turned around, walked past several empty seats and fetched a stewardess who arrived and asked me what I was going to do about 'my' problem. I told her that I didnt have a problem, she had a problem, and pointed to the nutty woman. I told her I was going to take a nap, then I put my feet up on the window ledge and laid back and closed my eyes.

Tell me the truth, is it me??

Talking of Argentine airhostesses.

As I have to fly frequently, at times the only option available is Aerolineas Argentina.

At least three times on three different flights of Aeroleneas, I was reprimanded for opening my "kindle" in mid air. I was told..I would bring the plane down because my kindle is open. The airhostesses, ensured, i switched it off ( yes..she watched) and made me put in the overhead bin in my bag and she came back to check on me. It happened to me on 3 different flights.

whats more, Aerolineas never has inflight entertainment!

I have only flown Aerolineas once (Madrid-BA) and it had in flight entertainment. There was a 20-inch TV about 10 seats away on the ceiling, flickering and making The King's Speech (the movie showing) look like it was made in the 1970's. Another thing from the 70s seemed to be the plane itself, or it was at least second hand because I could see the Air Canada stamps and markers that had not quite been taken away properly.

Was on the AA EZE-JFK flight last week. The purser was completely out of line, yelling at everyone and with a lot of disparaging remarks to boot. We were traveling with a baby and as everyone was sitting down, I had stopped an attendant to ask if we'd be able to get a bassinet (which we'd ordered). As she was answering me, this nut runs over and demands to know why we're talking when everyone should be seated. The attendant answers him (to my face) "I don't know, the passenger just came up to me", upon which the guy started yelling at me. Twilight zone.

I regret I didn't take down his name and include it in my complaint tweet. On second thought, no need to expose a dumb fool to the mob that is the Internet. But whoever wins the customer service award, I can guarantee you that it is not American Airlines.

Oh, so she's one of *those* people.

I love speaking in Spanish in the US. Sometimes I can feel the stares of rage and anger. Even some of my own relatives have made comments like "English, Please!" on my Facebox page. I just keep blissful writing in Spanish, often talking about them to my friends.

You have a Facebox Page. ????? You must be the dip whit ahead of me at he light checking his FaceBOX. Stick with Spanish.

So, I'm back for a month. This is the second time since I "left." Here are my impressions:

Flight: As usual, I have to explain the United checkin staff in Austin that I do not need to pay the reciprocity fee with a DNI. After 10 minutes of confused looks and a phone call I was on my way.

A strange thing happened after passing through the boarding gate in Houston. Customs was stopping everyone asking how much US and foreign currency they were carrying. I don't remember this happening before.

The United plane from IAH to EZE was newer. The seats in Economy Plus were roomy and (something I hadn't seen before) had USB ports. Great for charging up all the iCrap. Also, the staff was remarkably friendly. I really like United since the Continental merger.

AR Immigrations and Customs: Friendly fellow in immigration. I still have my old DNI (that's why I'm back) and asked what will happen if I don't get the new one before 2015. He said there wouldn't be a problem even if I don't have it. (YMMV)

Handed the customs dude my form and spoke in English ("Do I hand this to you") He payed attention to the screen, but said nothing. I was carrying quite a few electric guitar parts, which I thought might raise him out of the chair, but nothing else out of the ordinary.

Prices: Some things seem a lot more expensive than in August

- 50 pesos for a pint (The Oldest in Caballito) I don't think that changed. It was 50 last time I was here.
- 50 pesos for agua con gas / cafe cortado (Everywhere) This is what I use as a litmus test for inflation. That's a good 8-10 pesos more than last trip.
- 195 pesos for lunch (El Colmado - Cerviño y Kennedy). I used to live next door and would go for lunch 1-2 times a week. In March, it was only 95 pesos (mas o menos), in August 120, and now 195.
- 70 pesos for a liter and 3 empanadas (Casona Cultural Humahuaca) That's more than it used to be, but still a good deal.

I haven't had time to purchase or do much else yet.

Clarin: Today's headline - "El Gobierno compró equipos para espiar celulares y mails."
another one at the Oldest ?? that is a cool place!
