Hi everyone,
I really need some help figuring out the best and fastest visa option to be with my boyfriend, who is an Argentine citizen.

I’m from a country that requires a visa to enter Argentina (even as a tourist), and we want to be together soon.

I'm currently in Europe on a Schengen visa, but I'm not an EU citizen.

I'm exploring the following options and would really appreciate any advice or experience you can share:

a) Tourist visa – If I enter Argentina on a tourist visa, can we get married there later? Can I change my visa type from within Argentina?

b) Student visa – If I apply for a student visa, is it possible to marry while I’m in Argentina and then switch to a different visa (like a residency or family reunification visa)?

c) Marry in Europe – If we get married in Europe while I’m on my Schengen visa, can I apply for a family reunification visa to join him in Argentina? Would this be faster or easier?

I just want to be with him, but I’m not sure which path is the most realistic, fastest, and least complicated.

If anyone has experience with a similar situation or knows what the Argentine immigration prefers, please let me know!

Thanks in advance

This forum has many people who are highly experienced in matters of residence, citizenship, marriage etc so the fact that nobody here has yet attempted to answer your questions probably means your situation is too complex for quick, easy answers. I notice that you are getting prolific amounts of advice "elsewhere" - mostly from someone who quite openly admits they have very little clue about anything and whose own marriage experience dates back to the days when Argentina was a Spanish colony (I jest - but only a little.)

What is your boyfriend doing to help in all this? If you are both in Europe together has he been to the nearest Argentine consulate to find out about the things you and he need to know and that he doesn't know already? Because he is the Argentine in this partnership I think he should be the one making the running here.

The best and fastest option might be to come on a tourist visa, get married in Argentina, and then apply for residency or work on regularizing your status from within the country.

Expressing immigration intent and then applying for a tourist visa might not be the best idea.

Hi Nash,

unfortunately I can't provide any personal experience with marriage in argentina (yet) and I also can't tell anything about your specific situation.

One thing to keep in mind in case you choose to marry outside of Argentina is to not adopt the name of your boyfriend or vice versa as this isn't possible by argentine marriage laws and can cause trouble when applying for a DNI later (because they don't know how to handle the situation of your name on your certificate of birth being different from the one in your passport).

Other than that you'll have to check the formal requirements for marriage at the registro civil in the province you want to marry in.

My personal best guess would be to start looking into the tourist -> marriage -> temporary residency (family reunification) route first as it seems to be the least complicated should it be possible. But again all that is guesswork based on information available on the internet. The best way to get more reliable info seems to be to contact the registro civil of your province (your boyfriend could ask them about formal requirements and in general whether the type of visa you are entering the country with plays any role. This way you'd get a lot of info without ruling out any options later).

Best of success to both of you!

Thank you for the information! I appreciate the effort from others trying to help, though one person mentioned they got married quite a long time ago (centuries ago) and their spouse handled everything—so unfortunately, it wasn’t very relevant to my situation.

My boyfriend isn’t very familiar with how any of this works, and to be honest, he tends to be a bit laid-back about the process. I’m the one who’s more organized and focused on making sure all the documents and steps are handled properly. He keeps telling me to just relax and take it easy, but I don’t think that approach gets things done—especially when it comes to immigration procedures.

He’s suggested that I come on a tourist visa, but I haven’t been working recently (I’m currently a student) and plan to start working soon, so that may delay things. Ideally, we’d like to move forward as soon as possible.

However, I’ve read on this forum and elsewhere that, as a non-EU citizen who requires a tourist visa, I may not be allowed to change my visa status or remain in the country with the intention of marrying. I’ve come across suggestions that only citizens of countries that do not require a visa can later marry and apply for residence while in Argentina.

This has made me a bit concerned. I’m worried that entering Argentina on a tourist visa and then deciding to proceed with marriage could potentially cause legal or immigration issues for me.

Thank you so much for the information. I was actually planning to take his last name, so I really appreciate the heads-up!

Could you please share the names or threads of members who have experience with marriage, citizenship, and residency matters? If possible, and if they have the time, I would really appreciate the opportunity to ask them a few questions.

Thank you in advance!

If you're not sure about getting married and need more time to decide than the time a tourist visa allows you to stay in Argentina, this might not be your best and fastest option.
