Hola y'all!

So after three years of being in BA I've decided to get myself in blanco.

I've read some of the forums regarding the different approaches but my biggest question is-

How do I get US documents apostilled? I've checked some websites but they're charging like $500 for each document!

I'm under the impression that I'll need my birth certificate and a current federal police report.

Also- does it matter if they are translated in the US vs. Argentina?

If anyone could recommend an apostille/translation/notary service that they've used I'd greatly appreciate it!!

Another question- can I get these documents faxed? I have a friend coming from NYC next week but I doubt they'll be ready in time.

If anyone has any personal experiences/contacts they'd like to share feel free to PM me or write to [email protected]!

Thanks so much!

The FBI report can be certified/authenticated by the State Dept...go to the FBI website for details.

You no longer need a birth certificate to apply for residency.

As you will be applying for residency in Argentina, all translations must be done in Argentina by a licensed translator.

A "faxed" Apostille will not be accepted at migraciones. It must be the original.

You FBI report will take a number of weeks so your friend who is coming soon will not be able to help you this trip.

There is no reason to pay big bucks for an Apostille...or an "immigration" lawyer. In my OPINION, anyone who charges you $500 for an Apostille or several thousand dollars to help you get a visa is taking advantage of your ignorance. (Please don't be insulted. Ignorance only means lack of knowledge about something. I am ignorant about millions of things).

Since you did not specify which category of visa you are seeking, it is not possible to tell you which additional documents you will need and exactly how to get the Apostille for them. Any document which has been "notarized" in the USA can receive the Apostille. This can usually be done at the office of the Secretary of State in the state where the document was notarized.

As you have already lived in Argentina for three years, you probably know that you have to "qualify" for a visa and either be a student, have an Argentine employer "sponsor" you, have a foreign income, invest a godawful pile of money in an Argentine business, be the parent or child of or married to an Argentine citizen, or be married to a foreigner with residency, etc.

If you do not speak Castellano well, I can recommend a woman in Capital Federal who will help you and go to migraciones with you.

Her fee is $200USD and she will go with you to migraciones as many times as necessary (until you are granted residencia precaira or are rejected).

She speaks great English and knows the ropes.

You can also find a lawyer and apply for citizenship but it will cost much more than applying for a visa.

We toook care of fbi report in less than 2 weeks from BsAs.
1. Go to police station with 3 fingerprint cards. We found most stations will not do fingerprint work bc of laws that restrict. The station on santa fe and scalabrini ortiz worked for us. Bring three so you hopefully have one thst works.
2. FBI website has list of expediters who scan prints and get report in 24 hours.
3. Fbi expiditer must send their result to USaddress
4. Overnight that FBI report to Apostile expediter in DC with return fedex to address in US. They go to State Dept and get it done in 2 business days
5. Have person in US overnight bacmk to you
6. Bingo done in less than 2 weeks

I see NOLA has read the previous posts but did not specify which category of visa is desired.

It's also probable that a number of newcomers are following this thread and reading about the residency requirements for the first time.

Some of them might not be aware of the fact that in oder to receive a visa one must qualify for it..

For example, in oder to qualify for the Rentista (Financero) or Pensionado visas one must have a stable (and passive) foreign income of about $2000 per month and, in order to qualify for a work visa, an Argentine business which is registered with migraciones must "sponsor" the applicant. It is not possible to get a work visa and then go job hunting.

Anyone who has been living in Argentina for several years without a temporary resident visa should be as sure as possible that they meet the requirements for a visa, otherwise they might be better off staying as far away from migraciones as possible. It if they are denied temporary residency they will most likely be given a ten day order to leave the country.

In that case, applying for citizenship may be a much better idea.

Hey Che!! Can you turn on your private messages so I can ask you a couple of q's por favor?! :D

Just to add a bit from recent experience, the police station would not do fingerprints for me on a printed piece of paper (even though the FBI website sas its OK) so you will need to go to the US embassy to get the cards. You can go to the front gate with your passport and they will give you the cards there, without even going in the building.

I also used an FBI-approved expediter and I mailed out the prints last Friday via DHL and already had the results by Tuesday. Just waiting for the hard copy to arrive at my parents place so we can send for apostille. But didn't know there were expeditors for that, too, so will definitely look for some!
