He tried to bypass it by having a referendum.
The dude LITERALLY ignored the results of the popular referendum that banned him from running a 3rd time.
Conducted an election full of irregularities and "won" outright on a highly polarized country.
Was abandoned by pretty much all political allies and even the top military brass that was hand picked by him.
Millions went to the streets to protest.
But of course, it was a coup.

He could have entered history as one of the greatest leaders of Latin America if he had followed the laws, steeped aside and allowed for the democratic process to continue unobstructed. Instead, he tried to be just like the oligarch caudillos that he criticized so much and he will likely go down in history as just another one.

Plus he lost the referendum , and forged the election results to win . He should be in jail.
