What do I need in order to call an 877 number from Argentina?

In the past, MobileVoip had no restrictions re: toll free numbers. Load up for €10, bang away - many calls free or nearly so.

Google Voice is still the best for a free US number with unlimited free calling to US numbers, including to 800/877 US numbers. Prepay balance needed if calling other countries. Requires you to borrow or already own a real number to sign up.

If not, quick search shows TextNow will give free calling from their app installed on your phone. They will show you ads. I know nothing about it, and normally would not suggest such adware. But it looks simple if you need something free and quick. After setup and using it for free wifi calls, you have the option to request a paid sim for cell service, which is not a requirement and expensive compared to others.

Some information that might help others too.

I used the free version of TextNow for many years and it was great for unlimited free calling to US/Canada numbers, and receiving. Had to call 1800-numbers often, so it was great. Very good call quality too. It's perhaps the only free calling and texting app that does what it says. Nearly all others are bait and switch, or outright scams.

I lost my TextNow number, because apparently, they get mad if you use it in some countries. I used it all over the world without issue, until I used it in West Africa. They suspended the account for that reason. You can't create an account with VPN, as they'll immediately suspend it.

You can only install it when you're in the US and a few other places where it's "supported." Argentina isn't one. If you're still in the US or visiting, you can install it and then use it in most countries without issue. Just don't log out of the app and try to log back in while away.

Luckily, I was paying TextNow $5/year to retain my number, so I was able to port it out to Tello, when it was suspended. You don't have to pay the $5/year, but if you don't, you have to use the number at least once a month. Otherwise, you lose it and have to pick a new number.

Now I use Tello. Tello isn't free, but you can get a $7/month plan with 100 minutes, or $8 for 300 minutes. Both have unlimited text. You need to have eSim capability on your phone to use it, or you can order a standard SIM if you're in the US.

Good thing about Tello is it's not a VOIP service, but a real number, so you can receive codes from your bank or anywhere without issues. With TextNow, some deliver codes to it, some don't. You can set up a Tello account within minutes. Just make sure the e911 setting in the Tello account has an address entered, or calls might not work. You can also use your Tello minutes to call Argentine numbers and some other countries.

Tello rocks.

I've had a Rebtel International account for many years. I can call virtually any number from anywhere with no time limits, excellent quality and customer service for $10 US/mo. For those times I've spent hours and days "discussing" a problem with banks, insurance, government agencies or whatever, it is worth every penny.

I use Google Voice, it's free and works great for both local and 1-800 numbers (calls to both are free)
