Child Dies: Heavy Metal Poisoning

I wonder if lead is still added to gasoline and paint in Argentina?

Re:paint.

In theory... http://www.ambiente....=66&IdSeccion=0

limited to .06% vs .009% in USA as an example. http://www.ambiente....=66&IdSeccion=0 This changed in the US not long ago...

The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) (Public Law 110-314) lowered the concentration of lead in paint that is permissible-from 0.06 percent (600 ppm)-to the new limit of 0.009 percent (90 ppm).

In practice....hmmmm.... http://www.clarin.co...1016298427.html

I dunno, they seemed to really care about lead poisoning a couple of years back... haha

From what I heard of the story, the problem was that he inhaled the glitter into his lungs, but most reports made no mention of heavy metals. Apparently there's 2 types of glitter - one that is the normal stuff kids use in school (brillantina) and this other very fine powder stuff (purpurina) that is almost like a dust.

I don't think it's any secret that Argentina is a little behind the times when it comes to safety and knowledge about toxic substances. They still use asbestos for some things (I witnessed a request for asbestos tape and the request was granted) and I once was prescribed something called 'agua blanca de codex' by a dermotologist, which seems to be some type of lead acetate.

Reminds me a bit about this.

Lead might need to be added to some glitter for some reason but surely its marked as toxic and keep away from children. Absolutely mental if its not.

Are all vaccinations free of charge if you show a DNI? Even temporary resident?

Just the ones within the schedule, from birth to 16 years of age. For adults there are campaigns from time to time, like the flu and hep B. I had those two shots this year on a temporary residency. I got the Hep B shot after my brother in law and his wife were hospitalized with severe liver failure due to Hep B, otherwise I don't think I would have considered it. The children are covered already if one has stuck to the schedule.

I tried to get tuberculosis shot as well, but they don't cover adults now so I would have to find it privately.

I think Hep B and TBC cover for life, the only one you should repeat periodically is the antitetanus and diphteria combined shot (lasts 10 years).
I was thinking about getting the Hep A shot before coming here, but they basically laughed at me when I told them it was for Argentina.
I was especially concerned with Hep A & Dengue fever and visiting Iguazú, but the only thing I got was.... sunburnt. Heavily and painfully.
