Covid Vaccination Argentina

4 May 2022
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Hugo Pizzi, a member of the committee advising the Gov't on the coronavirus pandemic, has expressed his "great concern" about a recent increase in the number of Covid-19 infections in Argentina...."There is an under-recording [of ] cases] that nobody talks about,” Pizzi said in an interview with Radio La990. "The ideal would be [for everyone] to be vaccinated with three doses against Covid and also the flu," he insisted. “There are batches [of vaccines] that are expiring and there are many people who have not had a second or third dose," he added....

Covid-19: Nicolás Kreplak affirmed that the BA2 subvariant increased the number of infections. The Health Minister of the Prov of BA stated that "there is an increase in the number of cases of Covid and other respiratory diseases. This variant of Omicron, BA2, is circulating, but for the moment there is no increase in the number of hospitalizations....on the contrary, they are going down in the province....The third dose is extremely important," he added, "Now the efficacy that was previously achieved with two doses is achieved with three. And the fourth dose for people over 50 is available, without an appointment", he pointed out about the province's vaccination schedule....

....Scientists around the world are investigating how a dwindling number of people that have managed to dodge the coronavirus for more than two years, even after the highly transmissible Omicron variant drove a record-shattering surge in cases this winter. A majority of Americans have contracted the novel coronavirus since it began to spread in the USA in early 2020, according to the CDC. Experts hope that studying people who have avoided infection may offer clues — perhaps hidden in their genes — that could prevent others from being infected or more effectively treat those who contract the virus. “What we are looking for is potentially very rare genetic variants with a very big impact on the individual,” said András Spaan, a clinical microbiologist and fellow at the Rockefeller University in New York who is spearheading a search for genetic material responsible for coronavirus resistance....

Rise in Covid cases: Nearly 90% of the samples analyzed from people with coronavirus in CABA at the end of April corresponded to the BA.2 sublineage of the Omicron variant, according to a new report from the Argentine SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Sequencing Project (PAIS)....Experts estimate that the advance of this mutation, together with the fall in immunity-natural and acquired by vaccines- and the relaxation of care could explain the increase in the number of infections recorded in the last few weeks. "The BA.2 lineage of Omicron displaced the BA.1 lineage, associated with the last wave of Covid-19 in our country that occurred in January.
....In the last weeks analyzed (end of April), the BA.2 lineage was detected in 87% of the cases", said the PAIS Project report published on Tuesday. This Sunday, 17,646 infections were reported nationwide, representing a weekly increase of 54%. On the other hand, the detection of an infection by the BA.4 lineage was confirmed, which is the first recorded in South America....

....In the last 14 days, the number of cases of people with COVID-19 in Argentina increased by 182%. It is for this reason that the Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti, stated: "Today we are starting a fourth wave of COVID-19″, although she clarified that the country is "in a totally different situation". "Thanks to every measure taken and to the efforts of society, health teams and governments, at national, provincial and municipal levels, we have a panorama in relation to vaccination that allows us to move forward in a new stage of this pandemic," said the national official during a press conference held this Monday....

....Currently, according to the latest data, the increase in infections is driven by the circulation of the Omicron BA.2 subvariant of the coronavirus and by other sub lineages -such as Omicron BA.4 and Omicron BA.2.12.1 - that have been recently identified in the country. Today, 1 out of every 4 people tested in Argentina is diagnosed with COVID-19. In 6 of the 24 jurisdictions that make up the country, the growth of cases was higher: in CABA the increase was 205% during the last two weeks, in the Province of BA it was 212%, according to the data analysis of Dr. Jorge Aliaga, from the National University of Hurlingham based on open data from the Ministry of Health of the Nation....

....Along with Omicron BA.5 (which so far has not been reported in Argentina), the three new subvariants have mutations that alter a key amino acid called L452, which may help explain their ability to evade immunity. L452 is part of the receptor-binding domain, the part of the Spike protein that attaches to cells and enables infection. "Cases of COVID-19 are increasing because of different factors. There is a slow pace of vaccination with booster doses and it is known today that having only two doses of vaccines applied is not enough to face exposure to the Omicron variant and its sub lineages, which are more transmissible," Dr. Eduardo López, Director of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Chair at the School of Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires and the Ricardo Gutiérrez Children's Hospital of the City of Buenos Aires, told Infobae.

....CASES OF THE NEW SUBVARIANTS REPORTED IN CABA. People affected by these sublineages have already been detected in Argentina, according to a new report issued by the Proyecto País de Vigilancia Genómica del Coronavirus.

- Case of emerging lineage BA.4: according to the document, this is a 28-year-old patient, with no relevant morbid history: "he consulted for presenting oppressive headache associated with severe retroocular pain, stabbing abdominal pain and febrile record. Complete vaccination schedule for COVID-19 with 2 doses of Sinopharm. On physical examination: 98% saturated room air, no sounds on auscultation, painful abdomen on deep palpation in the umbilical region, no petechiae on skin or mucous membranes". The result was as follows: dengue negative, and positive for COVID-19. She did not refer to foreign travel or contact with people who had traveled abroad.

- Case of emergent lineage BA.2.12.1: in this case, he is a patient over 60 years of age with a history of hypertension and insulin resistance, who had a "moderate infection with COVID-19 with asthenia, odynophagia and congestion, to which he added a sub febrile record". Vaccinated with 3 doses (2 AstraZeneca + Pfizer, last on 12/21). "There is no information regarding any record of foreign travel or close contact with a traveler," the report states...

For international flight, my mother in law got a booster on sputnik but needs another dose of WHO approved. Is there a process for getting that to get valid entry into the US/Canada?
