Faced With Soaring Costs of Private Insurance, Poll Shows 58% of Small Business Owners Support Medicare for All

"Medicare for All is the only solution to our healthcare cost crisis that will offer relief to workers and small businesses alike."

A survey released this week by the Commonwealth Fund found that, faced with soaring costs under the for-profit status quo, 58 percent of U.S. small business owners support replacing America's dysfunctional healthcare system with Medicare for All.

Progressives celebrated the finding as evidence that a key argument in favor of Medicare for All—that the plan would reduce costs for small employers as well as millions of workers—is resonating.

As the Commonwealth Fund pointed out in an overview of its survey, small businesses lack the advantages of large corporations when it comes to negotiating with the private insurance industry. "Small-business owners are often left with little recourse and few options when a health insurance carrier hikes costs," the organization noted.

According to the new poll, 61 percent of small business owners believe the pharmaceutical industry is "very responsible" for soaring healthcare costs, and 60 percent feel the same about the insurance industry.

The Business for Medicare for All coalition said on Twitter that the Commonwealth survey "confirms what we already know: Medicare for All is the only solution to our healthcare cost crisis that will offer relief to workers and small businesses alike."

If Donald Trump's China Trade War Escalates, the U.S. Could Lose Almost 800,000 Jobs and Plunge Into a Deep Recession: Economists

Economists at Moody's Analytics estimate in a report that further escalation of President Donald Trump's trade war with China could cost the American economy hundreds of thousands of jobs and plunge it into a deep recession.

Moody's says there is a 35 percent probability that the trade war will escalate. It modeled the potential impacts of an escalating trade conflict between the U.S. and China, which has seen tariffs imposed on much of the $540 billion in Chinese goods imports.

"Given the high-stakes game of chicken, it is not difficult to imagine a darker scenario in which tariffs on all U.S.-China trade rise further and additional nontariff barriers are imposed," the Moody's report says.

"In this scenario, we assume that tariffs on all U.S.-China trade rise to 30 percent and that a series of nontariff barriers take effect.

"These include Chinese bans on U.S. technology exports, voluntary boycotts of U.S. brands, revoked market licenses for U.S. firms, a sharp devaluation of the yuan, and a threat to sell China's vast holdings of U.S. Treasuries."

Trump tried to negotiate with Pelosi, "work something out" on the whistleblower complaint after she announced an impeachment inquiry.

Shortly after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Trump reached out to her to negotiate, according to NBC News.

Trump told the California Democrat he'd like to "figure this out," NBC News' Heidi Przybyla reported. He reportedly said, "Hey, can we do something about this whistleblower complaint, can we work something out?"

Pelosi apparently swatted him down with a curt response: "Tell your people to obey the law."

The news is the latest in the back-and-forth between Trump and congressional Democrats as they fight over the whistleblower complaint filed against Trump in August.

‘Shut up, moron. Shut up. Shut up’: Trump lawyer Giuliani abuses fellow TV guest live on air as impeachment rocks White House

Rudy Giuliani hurled abuse at a fellow Fox News guest, calling him a “serial liar” and a “moron” as the president’s opponents pledged to seek Donald Trump’s removal from office.

With the threat of impeachment hanging in the air, Mr Giuliani’s outburst on Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle came as he looked to defend Donald Trump and himself from allegations the president had offered to trade aid for political favours with the government of Ukraine.

The lawyer lambasted fellow guest Chris Hahn, a former aide to senior Democrat Chuck Schumer, saying he should “sue him for libel” after the liberal commentator implied Giuliani was asked by the US State Department “to dig up political dirt on Trump’s opponent”.

Mango the fruit has been left out in the sun too long. Such a pity.

I can suggest some Dem pols that would serve better if they left the United States, the usual suspects starting with Nancy Pelosi, Schumer, Cummings, Waters, Lieu, Schiff and many more. I doubt Argentina would want them.
No country would want those thieving scumbags. Cristina would find those clowns muscling

VIGIL TO PROTECT AND DEFEND THE U.S. CONSTITUTION & RESTORE THE GEORGE WASHINGTON STATUE IN BUENOS AIRES!

MONDAY, 16 DECEMBER 2019, 18:00 – 20:00

Did you know there is a statue of George Washington in Buenos Aires?
It was a gift from the United States to the Argentine people made in 1910, to celebrate the 100 Year Anniversary of the Revolución de Mayo. It is located opposite the residence of the US Ambassador to Argentina, facing in the direction of the US Embassy, at the intersection of Av. Del Libertador y Av. J. F. Kennedy (Jardines de Palermo).

Regrettably, Washington’s statue is in a scandalous state of neglect and decay, standing in silent rebuke. Covered in grime and wreathed in cobwebs, one could say it symbolizes the state of our constitution if left solely in the hands of our 45th President, Donald J. Trump.

Protect the Constitution, Restore the Statue!

In the context of the impeachment hearings underway in Congress, Democrats Abroad in Argentina (DAAR) invites all Americans in Argentina to attend a candlelight vigil to protect our Constitution and restore the statue of George Washington. On Monday, December 16th, we will gather at the base of the statue to hear a few short speeches by Americans living in Argentina and a brief reading of Madison and Adams’ Federalist Paper 51, which outlines the separation of powers under the Constitution.

Let this vigil remind all Americans to return to the principles of our founding fathers. By keeping to their principles, we can save our democracy and the future of our country.

Meet us there on Monday, December 16th from 18:00 to 20:00. Bring a candle as call attention to this monument and what it symbolizes. Share your thoughts and reflect on the great responsibility all Americans hold to support and protect our Constitution, our Republic, and our future as a free people.

No need to RSVP. Just show up. Bring a friend! Bring candles!

Coal Knew Too: Explosive Report Shows Industry Was Aware of Climate Threat as Far Back as 1966

"It wasn't just big oil that knew about climate change decades ago."
coal_plant_insurance_chubb_0.jpg

A new report shows conclusively that the coal industry was aware of the climate impacts of burning fossil fuels as far back as 1966—and, like other sectors of the fossil fuel industry with knowledge of the consequences of their business model, did next to nothing about it.

The revelation was published in an article by Élan Young at HuffPost Friday.

The story uses a discovery by Chris Cherry, professor of civil engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, to show industry foreknowledge of the ramifications of extractive technologies over 50 years ago. Cherry found the evidence in a 1966 copy of the Mining Congress Journal he was given by his father-in-law

"There is evidence that the amount of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere is increasing rapidly as a result of the combustion of fossil fuels," Garvey wrote. "If the future rate of increase continues as it is at the present, it has been predicted that, because the CO2 envelope reduces radiation, the temperature of the earth's atmosphere will increase and that vast changes in the climates of the earth will result."

Garvey added that the result of the changes in climate could include melting icecaps and rising seas.
