Dengue kills 14 and infects nearly 30,000 across Argentina

I will take my chances. The police in the USA kill, on average, 3 people a day. Murderous US husbands, boyfriends, and exes kill on average 2 women a day. Dengue is a blip in the statistics at 14 in over 100 days.

Murderous Argentine husbands, boyfriends, and exes kill on average 1 woman a day. A higher rate per capita than the USA.

What does this have to do with dengue?

My takeaway is use repellant if you're outside in an area with a lot of mosquitos.

good grief

One of my neighbors had it, he was bed ridden in his apartment for over a week, poor guy. Some friends from Colombia used to get it annually like the flu, but there has been a lot of work by the government and NGOs to intentionally infect mosquito populations with Wolbachia, an intracellular parasite that cuts Dengue/Chikungunya transmission by upwards of 80%.

Brazil is looking to implement it, and La Nación had an article about it and scientists desire to test it here too. Only issue is it takes 5 to 7 years to see results.

Another option is CRISPR which lets us play god to a certain extent via genome editing. We could eliminate mosquitos as a population by either blinding them or making them all males or females so they can't reproduce, but people have a lot of strong opinions on that one.

good grief
exactly the way I feel when I see the wingnut expat K haters blame everything on socialism.
The actual chances of dying from dengue are infintesimal.
But as a US citizen, I know people who have had gun violence take friends and relatives from them.
I live more and more in Argentina, because its so much calmer, and safer, in pretty much every way.
I still have friends getting covid, and know of people still dying in the USA, at a much higher rate than dengue here, due to anti-vaxx madness.

There is violence in the USA, there is violence in Argentina, people have died of COVID. If you feel safer in Argentina than the USA, that's great, I'm happy for you. Again what does this have to do with an article about mosquitos?

I've had dengue. I was in bed achy, fever, chills, etc for about a week. It's not fun, but it isn't the end of the world for most healthy people. This article isn't suggesting you live your life in fear over it.

If you're in an area in Argentina where dengue is present, especially the north, being aware that it exists is helpful so that you can take precautions.
