Dolarhoy and the other sites show the Dollar Turista/Tarjeta rate around 1,620 pesos to the dollar. My credit cards (both visa and mc) are converting around 1,084 as the final rate, which is above the official but way below Tursta/Tarjeta. They are getting run as credit not debit. The MC rate page shows around 1,080 the last few days.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a different way to get the Dolar Tarjeta/Turista rate?

It's way higher so I'm motivated ;)

What is the tourist dollar or card
The card dollar is the exchange rate used to pay abroad for purchases with Argentinian debit and credit cards, as well as for the purchase, also in dollars, of tickets and tourist packages to destinations outside Argentina, unless the buyer pays for the purchase with previously saved dollars.

Not necessarily abroad. Essentially, if the seller accepts dollars but you're paying with an Argentinian credit card in pesos, you'll be charged the 'Dólar Turista' rate of 1,620 pesos per dollar spent.

Got it that the dolar tarjeta/turista is for conversions by argentinian issued peso based credit cards that are used to buy things in dollars.

Many sites say that rate is for usd based cards used to buy things in pesos in Argentina so I was confused.

Seems like a huge disincentive to use an ar card to buy anything in dollars.

The propose is to limit the amount of USD that the central bank needs to convert an Argentina residents purchase using their Argentina peso based bank credit card. The same reason they want to minimize importers asking to convert their pesos to dollars to purchase whatever they want to import. The central bank does not have enough dollars.

Exactly. That is the reason. To disincentivize people from asking to buy things from outside the country that are not priced in pesos.

What you are paying with your foreign credit card is NOT being converted at the dolar turista rate but at dolar MEP or CCL rates

Thanks - aware of that thanks to the helpful comments in this thread!
