Dueno says they are now calculating the $ at 4.65

Sorry to hear this happened to you. Honestly, I think it's only a matter of time before Conde Nast Traveler and all the other travel mags that write about the glories of Buenos Aires start publishing warnings about renting furnished apartments because this happens ALL THE TIME, more often than not. It's a disgrace.

Why don't you guys report these people that are landlords if they try to F you?
If to pay USD which you should not have agree to begin with, you took pesos and purchased USD, which is now difficult, why not pay in pesos the last rate u have bought last month? The internation exchange is 4.26 and their options as landlords are:
1. Get pesos equivilant, fair market value
2. Get nothing
3. Get nothing and get reported to AFIP or whoever

that reminded me of this
Due to the combination of a Stable Government, NO Taxes, NO Crime, Healthcare benefits, Clean Cities, and Untouched Nature, but somehow chilly winters, International Living Magazine has ranked North Korea as the number 2 favorite expat destination, after Cuba.

DO NOT RENT THIS APT !! If something goes wrong, such as a small leak in a sink to a ceiling falling down, this darling won´t do anything; She won´t even take your phone calls.

What a shame, I would have totally rode the Argentine gravy train with her f'ing apartment. Since people have tried to screw me over sooooo many times here (most times they weren't succesful, but 3 times they were), I now consider it a sport.......TIT for TAT!

Yes, tit for tat ALWAYS works as evidenced by the Israeli's and Palestinians, The Northern Ireland Catholics and Protestants, North and South Sudan...good advice.

If there are dollar controls, this whole paying rent in dollars set-up simply must end. We simply won't be able to procure them anymore.

Craigslist is also getting ridiculous in terms of prices. They are charging New York prices for some of the places. Market discipline will probably take care of that eventually, but the prices on Craig's are almost an insult now, and that's in comparison to a year ago.

So PalermoGirl, you're probably taken back by all these responses. We, the veterans, have seen it all. We still like living here, experiencing another culture and all that it has to offer but we've also all been ripped off every way from Sunday. It's sad but here, you actually have to ANTICIPATE how you're going to get cheated, lied to, ripped off in just about everything you do. That's what being a foreigner in BA is...perhaps it's better in the other cities and in fact, I have heard that the cultures of just about every other place in Argentina is much more honest then BA. Just beware.

Thanks everyone for your spirited replies.

The owner has sent me a text telling me that she will refund my deposit of $1800. I am supposed to go to some company by 8pm tonight and there will be an envelope with my name on it. Of course, I am hoping that all the money will be there. If not, I am prepared to go report this and let everyone know who this person is and where they work.

I've actually lived here for over 1 year, so I'm not completely naive.

Will keep everyone posted.

I don't want to sound scary but I would err on the cautious side and take someone with you if it's not somewhere you recognize.
