Flights to New York: best prices?

The truth is booking a reasonable amount of time (4+ months) they're all pretty much the same price... Kayak or or priceline MIGHT save you 50 bucks max.

jajajajaja - sorry, nothing right now is affordable to NY. I'm paying 1850 for economy in January on American

If you can wait until later, LAN is having their sale for flights beginning in March (IIRC - maybe late Feb?). R/T you can get for around $1000 I think. Probably about the same on other airlines as they usually price match.

Continental has 1400 dollar flights at the end of Jan, down to 1200 in march, down to 800 in late april may if you book now

You can get it down to about $1,000 and 7,500 avios for leaving at the end of January, and going to Brazil, Europe and New York, with return to BA. What you need to do if you want to save some money is think outside the box.
Also booking 4 months in advance is not going to get you the best price on most routes most of the time, prices are adjusted constantly based on load factors and competition.

Greg - as always, you have amazing flight finding skills!

1. Use http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ to do initial screening across multiple departure/arrival airports AND across multiple dates. Include unusual time-windows and nearby airports e.g. MVD, Rosario, Cordoba, Aeroparque. Then go to kayak.com (or equivalent meta-searcher) to do the actual booking.

2. Search fares with forced stop in Lima or Santiago Chile, (or sometimes Quito, Bogota, Medellin, PanamaCity, SanPablo), either outbound or inbound. Can force this with multi-airport mode, not just roundtrip mode.

Warning: these two tricks take patience/time, both in the searching and in the actual travel, however they often save considerable money and allow "free" touring stopovers if you're so inclined.
