Since June all bank accounts will have aliases.

The Central Bank (BCRA) announced today that beginning June 1, all bank accounts will require to have an 'alias'. If you don't select one, it will be assigned by default to all existing accounts as well as the new ones.

The monetary authority stressed that the format of the alias should be "a random combination of three short words and utilizing frequently used words in the Spanish language, whose spelling is not ambiguous when transmitted orally."

Federico Sturzenegger said the bank alias allows users to more easily identify their account, using any combination of up to 20 characters.

Banks and mobile payment applications allow immediate transfers by identifying the receiver by their alias, in a simpler way than with the CBU. Before confirming the payment, a screen indicates the real name of the recipient to avoid errors, pointed out the Central Bank. He also reminded that the alias "is portable: a bank client can unlink his alias from one of his accounts and link it with another. No other user can use an alias that has already been used". The system is centrally managed, to avoid duplication and guarantee the safety of operations, by the COELSA electronic clearing house.

Step by step: how to assign an alias to the CBU of your bank account
There is time until the first of June to replace the current figure of 22 characters. Those who do not modify it prior to June 1st will be assigned one by default.

This is how you create a "CBU Alias" from the cell phone, a computer, or through Home Banking........

"3 Frequently used words in Spanish"

This will be a fun game. I'll start:

Boludo
Pelotudo
Choripan

Hey, no fair! You took all three most-used Argentine words!

So, from the second tier:

Pendejo
Desgraciado
Cuotas

Expats, this is your chance to put to use your creative talents when selecting a combination of 3 words in Castellano!

Is this for real?

Has anyone successfully done this with Banco de la Nacion Argentina?

Step by step instructions would be appreciated.

Yes, Tom. This is for real. If not done by June 1st, an "alias" will be assigned by default to your individual account.

Using the Home Banking website of your particular bank:

1. Login using you password...

2. Click on Consultas de Alias-CBU

.......and that is as far as I can guide you because my account is with another bank. Each institution's home banking website is visually set-up somewhat differently. Hopefully someone on the forum who is using Banco de La Nacion will post instructions.

You can also wait until the "alias" is assigned by default. If you don't wish to maintain that "alias" and no one has posted specific instructions including how to change it online, you can go to your bank branch and they will assist you in person.
