Have You Experienced Prejudice Or Racism In Argentina?

I'm sorry but you are wrong. We are mostly mestizos. I'd say 60-70%, and increasing because mestizos have like, easy, 7 kids each while white have 1 or 2 (not a racist comment, just the truth). Perhaps you never got too far from barrio norte/Recoleta/Palermo. On the other hand, it's true that in Argentina white=good negro=bad... well maybe if a dark skinned girl is hot and ready to show her body that's OK.
In my case it's not the skin I don't like, I really really hate the way the vast majority of poor mestizo people (villeros) from Buenos Aires (either capital or province) talk and behave. We are not, as you may already seem to know, very educated people but these guys take it to whole different level. If you think I'm being a racist, go to Constitucion and hop in the train that goes to "Bosques via Temperley" during rush hours (between 5 and 6 pm), then come here and tell me what you saw. You will see some serious animal behavior there, mad people just to trying to get a seat. I once saw a woman passing through the window of the train to get herself a nice seat. Very funny and very sad at the same time.

I've seen the same type of behavior riding the trains to university in Zona Oeste. It's atrocious. The day before yesterday I saw someone a caucasian Argentine in a Ciudad Verde vest throw an empty 2.25 liter of coke through his car window. I've even seen really disgusting behavior by uneducated upper class caucasian Argnetines in San Isidro, too.

It is true that the Native American Argentines have two to three times as many children. Keep in mind many, not all, have so many children to receive help from the government. More children more money.

Hi,

I really do not know from where you got those numbers from, 60-70% mestizo? Are you for real? Please show me some links of your "facts", some studies. I do not think that you have any, you are just a racist troll.

Once you read the above paper you will be very surprise.

You also have to take into consideration that Argentina is far greater than el Conurbano. Every single town in the deep Buenos Aires, Pampas Cordoba, Santa Fe, Entre Rios, etc, is full of people with European only Ancestors. So please, get your "facts" right before come here and post ridiculous staff.

Cheers!

Never mind. I really don't care.

I have definitely experienced this. On several occasions, I have gone somewhere that I’ve frequented for years - but with a foreign visitor, speaking English - and the very same people who would usually be warm and courteous towards me suddenly become cold and rude. There is definitely a lot of resentment, and given my above-mentioned experiences I can certainly understand why. I have no idea how this can be resolved, because it runs very, very deep.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. People get offended when I speak English to someone else in front of them. I've actually had several situations amongst mutual friends, where one friend didn't understand something in Spanish so I explained it in English, and the other party (who didn't speak English) got upset. It was weird but I had not experienced that in any other country (probably because in the other countries I've been to, people are used to interacting more with foreigners.)

Ha, I couldn't help but have a chuckle at all the back and forth over how white Argentines are. Yes, it seems that Argentines have more European blood than the rest of Latin America, but even so, most of the European immigrants tend to be from southern Europe, and most people have a mix of indigenous blood and European blood (which is what the CIA report was saying, that 97% had European blood with some mix of indigenous blood i.e. MESTIZO. The low percentage was PURE indigenous blood, which there are very few of left here).

Either way, the point still stands that the TV presents a blond hair (even if it's bleached) blue eyed population, while the reality is usually tanned skinned, black hair, dark eyes. I think Western countries they are required to put in a token "black guy" in some of their productions so as not look so discriminatory, but here it's pretty rare a native looking actor makes it on TV for any role that's not a maid.

uhmm... I'm argentine. I live in the zona sur del gran Buenos Aires and I know pretty much most of it (at least from Avellaneda to Florencio Varela and Solano). I travel constantly to capital (luckily not very often because I hate the city) and I have been to pretty much all the barrios. I know some parts of zona oeste, zona norte and La Plata. I haven't travelled that much to the interior but I have been to Rosario, Cordoba, Mendoza and Entre Rios (all the "whiter" provinces). I have two eyes and I can notice that we are mostly mestizos, not white. In Palermo and Recoleta, you are right the population is mostly white. What about Jujuy, Salta, La Rioja, Catamarca, San Juan, Santiago del Estero, Formosa, etc. I have never been there but when I see some footage of those places on TV mestizos are everywhere. Maybe someone who has actually been there can enlighten us.

And why am I a racist? Because I say we are mostly mestizos? That doesn't make much sense. If I were a racist I would close my eyes and think and dream we are mostly white Europeans (like many white Argentine tend to think).

Never mind. I really don't care.

OK.

I beg to differ here. Unlike other countries in Latin America, Argentina in fact has an overwhelming white majority. That's not a good thing, that's not a bad thing. It's just a fact. I'm sure that producers in Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, and whatnot also seek to have TV ads have mostly white people (some clear misconceptions in their head for sure). The thing is that Argentina has a completely different makeup. In fact, compare an average crowd in Buenos Aires and in any American city. There are obvious differences. The language, the way people dress, the things they do, how late they stay out. The most dramatic is though... There are a lot less minority groups in Argentina, compared to an average American crowd, a BA street will have almost no black people, very few Asians, some darker skinned people. But that's it.

According to the CIA World Factbook, this is the racial makeup of Argentina: white (mostly Spanish and Italian) 97%, mestizo (mixed white and Amerindian ancestry), Amerindian, or other non-white groups 3%

Northern Italian or Southern Italian? :)

I've never experienced racism, but I've had a hard time getting people to understand where I'm from sometimes.
I come from a Mexican family and I grew up in the US, but in BA people get really confused by this.

I've had past colleagues, students, and "conocidos" ask me "Oh so which city in Mexico are you from?" after I've explained several times that I've never lived in Mexico and I was born and raised in the US. My Spanish is really good so I guess people are thrown off by the fact that I dont have the typical "yanqui" accent. I've even been told many times that I look Argentine but I sound like someone from somewhere in Latin America.

I do have to say that people are not at all ashamed to insult Bolivians, Paraguayans, and Peruvians. I know racism exists in every country but I feel like people are very open about it here.
Someone on this thread also mentioned that in BA they refer to Asians as Chinos but I've noticed that it's not done in a disrespectful way. I feel like maybe they might not be using the word "Asiatico" because it comes off as too formal. I've often heard people say "el chino de corea" or "el chino de taiwan"

But on that note I've also heard an alarming amount of people say "Chino, japones.... es todo lo mismo" which I have to admit, REALLY bothers me

When they say "chino, japones....es todo lo mismo" just reply with: "argentino, boliviano, paraguayo....es todo lo mismo".
