How easy to open US$ a/c in the states?

If it is just a USD a/c you need then you do not need to look only at banks in the USA.
As a Brit you will be aware about Isle of Man accounts and Jersey accounts etc... these can be set up in USD also - in fact there are so many options globally unless you have a specific need for an account in the US then I would probably look elsewhere.

But in the US, I know of people non-US opening accounts with Chase - monthly fee is something like $5-15 unless your account is about a certain threshold.

Being a brit pounds are not really of use so like the locals I am saving in $. Since it looks like I will be staying here for awhile, I was curious as to how easy it is to open up an account in the States as a tourist. Can I just rock up to a local branch with my passport and give them an address?

The idea of hiding money around the house sounds great until there is a fire or the cleaner nabs it!
