That is correct. He never suggested he bring me back money, if he had, that would have set off alarm bells.
I asked him if he could bring me back some money since he was returning in a few days and he said, "sure no problem".
Regarding how I know he was in Uruguay, I sent the money to Uruguay and I received a phone call from him from Uruguay apologizing for not returning on one of his three scheduled, but always postponed, returns.

Maybe we should give the scammer some credits. He didn't mean to scam you in the first place, so maybe things really got off his control?!

There is no excellent marketing here, what he did was not smart. I hope he is smart enough to make it right for Joe.

I meant "maybe we should be patient since he didn't propose the thing to Joe, maybe who we are calling "scammer" did really run into problems or simply wants to stay longer in Uruguay and has no access to Internet to communicate promptly with Joe".
I didn't mean it "let's compliment the scammer for its marketing abilities"

The scammer didn't bring up the whole idea of the cash run, Joe did. Maybe the other guy really wanted to take his time off in Uruguay and this favor for Joe ended up not working well with his plans?!

The Devils Advocate a Feline?

No, but it seems highly unlikely that this unpleasant situation was planned by the other guy.
We all agree that opportunity makes the thief, but all we know is:
  • There are other people scammed by this individual
  • The modality of the past scam doesn't match this situation
  • The individual did not propose anything to Joe
I have my idea on who we are talking about, I remember a posts about a forum member who said he had not yet returned from Uruguay. It didn't sound like this member had plans to stay or leave in Uruguay, so why we do assume he ran with the money?

The only thing that leaves me so-so is the lack of communication from the other guy' side, but maybe he is out sailing or without Internet coverage. In case this is not the issue, I believe Joe already heard some complains about taking this publicly, but he posted nothing about this.

Another forum mystery left unsolved. So far.
Stay tuned, folks.

Well I think I've been pretty patient. He was supposed to return July 26th.

No one complained about taking it public.

A mutual friend suggested I postpone taking it public it for a week. That was several weeks ago.

I think you're under the impression this happened a few days ago. It's been going on for close to a month, that is, his stalling has been going on close to a month.

As I mentioned I also suggested multiple times he just Xoom me the money, which he promised to do last Friday - but then he went silent. I offered to cover all the Xoom fees.

He also said he was planning to store his stuff at my apartment for only a few days - it's been over a month.

He did mention his internet connection was slow once. He is staying at temporary aparthotel I think. That was the case last week at least. I talked to him on Skype one week ago.

I wish he would tell his side of the story on the forum.

His not being able to return to Argentina might not have been planned. In that case he should have Zoomed back the money.

On the bright side ... if those duffles contain duct-taped bags of cocaine and $100 Dollar bills then I think you'll be ahead on the game. that is if you can run fast. :)

That gives me an idea for a story! hahahahaha!

I had the same problem with the same person not wanting to retrieve his things which he had also asked me to keep for him. Then he wouldn't pick them up when I wanted them out! Altho I did not lose any money I almost lost my sanity trying to get him out from my apartment (where he had been pet sitting) and his stuff out when I returned from my trip.
He is a repeat offender, for whatever reason. He did not steal anything, but simply wouldn't respect my requests for him to vacate with his stuff...he would argue with me and try and convince me to let him stay (he stayed on my couch in the living room which is basically half my apartment )while his stuff occupied my limited storage. I thought I was just keeping his stuff for two weeks, ha! Stupid me! He has a way of dragging two weeks into two months..he's masterful at that...He left when I threatened to put his stuff on the street and told him my psychologist said if he didn't get out I'd have a breakdown...and I said I'd call the police.....

He sounds like my Argentine ex-husband. I couldn't even get him out after the divorce.

It all makes sense now.
