I recently arrived with an Iphone4 and yesterday I went to Movistar to get telephone service here. They said they could not open the phone and sent me to Apple who told me that because I purchased the Iphone4 from Verizon Wireless in the USA, not from Apple, the phone has Verizon software and cannot be converted for use here.
Any suggestions?

If your phone isn't unlocked you will not be able to use it here with an Argentinean carrier. I think it cost me like $25 to unlock it and it works with my claro sim.

There is no unlock possible for a Verizon iPhone 4.
This iPhone uses CDMA technology; CDMA is used by Verizon and Sprint in the US but not many more places in the world. Most of the world uses GSM. This means that an AT&T iPhone may or may not be unlockable, but that a Verizon iPhone 4 uses a technology that no carrier in Argentina uses.

Really your only option is to sell the phone on eBay back in the US, and buy a new phone.

All of this applies to the iPhone 4, NOT the 4S, which when bought on Verizon supports both, and if you speak to Verizon beforehand, may be unlocked for international GSM use.

Hope this helps.
