Is Argentina's beef the best in the world?

CNN's Richard Quest gets his gaucho on and wrangles with a beef lovers question on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

It can be the best but one needs to know the supplier or restaurant . In 2003 the meat was superb everywhere in buenos aires now it's few Places . My favourite steak in Buenos Aires Is the tomahawk steak at the same name restaurant Tomahawk El Salvador and Arévalo Palermo . It's a huge portion for two grassfed from the plains of la pampa

It can be at some places and it can be amazing at other places . There are some outstanding restaurants for all tastes in Buenos Aires ! I currently live in San Carlos de Bariloche and there is a absolutely amazing parrilla here called Alto el fuego . I ordered today bone marrow. sweetbreads of lamb , rib eye steak shared by two and still we could not eat it all . It was absolutely delicious and tender ! The price for 2 was 5600 pesos .

It's pretty easy to say stuff like this ... with no baseline comparison around the world, in tons of different restaurants.

For instance, my baseline of eating in more than 125+ countries, different price points and styles of restaurants ... I can say that "higher price" tourist joints like La Brigada, Don Julio, La Cabrera, Duhau @ Park Hyatt are pretty damn phenomenal at 1/4 the price you would pay at any North American restaurant of similar ilk.

Is Argentine beef better than everything else in the world ... can't say ... I'm sure there is some sherpa who feeds his cows honey glazed berries and ambrosia and sings them lullabies at night to ensure they are never stressed - I'm sure that beef is pretty phenomenal.

What I can say, is that if you're in Argentina for a while, you're going to get some great beef and you're lucky to have the comparative price points you have. Don't think it's any better out there ... (Maybe I'm writing lots because I need to defend how positively I felt about my last couple weeks in Buenos Aires ;P)

The reality is that to eat well in Argentina now one must pay a lot of money for high quality meat products . Before even your supermarket steak was grass fed . I remember in 2003 being amazed by the high quality taste of the meat from the supermarket but now you have to go to speciality butchers to find this flavour . In Palermo neighbourhood there are some tremendous carnicerias that specialise in grass fed meats . Also you can order argentinas version of kobe beef online which is is superb , Be aware though that the prices are very high in us dollars but nowhere the price of Japan !!!!
