Is there a better way to get pesos than Western Union?

Is it financially worth it to do the one day Colonia round trip for $9999 US.

Would that beat WU?

How much would be the difference?

Can you actually do that? In my experience, the Uruguayan ATMs are horribly recalcitrant. I've done multiple $200 withdrawals and it gets to be a bit of a drag. Only in banking hours, so no holidays, no weekends, only until 3pm or so, only if you can navigate the bloody ATM menu, and only if some nice person stuffed the bloody ATM with USD.

In the absence of a Lego re-enactment, some pointers would be welcome. IMHO the Colonia / Montevideo run is overrated. Go to the beach instead.

I'm thinking of accumulating 10 WU/Uruguay transfers $1000 US EACH. Then cashing all 10 transfers in one trip. That would work, no?

I'm only interested in the economics and numbers of $9999 US operation. Uruguay beaches are not part of my enquiry.

Any benefit or difference compared 10 WU/Argentina transfers of $1000 US each (automatically changed to pesos).

If no significant difference or benefit ,,,, then what is a more beneficial way to get $10000 US?

A side comment on ATM service in Colonia, Banco BRU, can deliver US$1000 cash, charging your debit card, inside through a teller.
Additionally inside the Colonia Casino facilities, one can use an ATM open 24 hrs. After midnight is a new period.

I phoned a Colonia WU exchange office and asked about receiving a WU transfer in US dollars. The agent told me no problem IF we have enough dollars then..! now 10K dollars..?

Can someone inform me on the numbers?

Let's assume that I successfully accumulated $10000 US and successfully arranged to cash them all in one trip. How would the numbers differ or compare?

$10000 US (100 bills of $100 US) WU/Uruguay
vs.
$10000 US (converted to peso) WU/Argentina

Hard fo compare.

$10,000 US cash have a potential time value depending when exchanged into pesos..!
$10,000 US converted to Arg pesos have a fixed value.

Assuming the Uruguayan $10000 US and the Argentine $10000 US were converted to pesos at the same moment. No time difference. Which one will be more beneficial?

For example ,,,, purchase of one big item of $10000 US.

Mystery solved. No difference whatsoever.

If I get a Dollar from Uruguay and convert it to pesos ,,,,, current arbolito rate is 1285.

If I stay home in BsAs and WesternUnion myself a Dollar ,,, current WU rate is 1288.

Doesn't make any sense going Uruguay. Strictly from the economic sense. (Not to mention the huge risk carrying large sums of cash across borders and wasting a whole day)

Bottom line ,,,,,, WU rate = arbolito rate.

For a big item purchase Uruguay is not better than WU.

Is there a better way for $10000 US?
