Ivan De Pineda In Dublin/belfast .....cod = Abadejo ?

I think surubi (very tasty, best eaten in Sante Fe province straight from the River) is a local species. Not sure it has a translation?

It's type of catfish, but different from it's north american cousin as I understand.

.

I think Haddock. It can sometimes refer to swordfish in Spanish, but usually in Argentina they refer to swordfish as pez espada. I think pollock and haddock are the same thing.

Here are some translations of some of the fish that are eaten here:
Mero - grouper
Merluza - hake
arenque - herring
pargo - snapper
bacalao - cod (usually)
red snapper - huachinango (most difficult to find in Argentina)
trout - trucha
vagre - catfish (I think)

If someone wants to expand on the list, that would be great.

Salmón = Salmon

You're welcome!
:)

You almost have to go by the scientific name since common names can often refer to several different types of fish/species. The 'cod' 'bacalao' that you get in Spain or Ireland is fished in north Atlantic waters - seeing as BA doesn't have the strongest fish culture, I doubt it would be easy to find. Merluza and abadejo are cheap substitutes.

Thanks to this thread I was reminded of this old song. :)

Are you kidding me, salted cod is practically falling out of this country. Every supermarket and delicatessen seems to have it yet I don't see anyone buying it.

Salted Cod is very expensive. I´m from Long Island, where cod is a very common fish, not expensive. Here, it is a luxury item, which is why no one buys it. But abadejo would be a good substitute in a recipe.
Now what I really miss is eel in sushi. . . mmmm. . .
