I'm sure there are others for under 35, and I know those may be listed wrong. You know more than me because you're there, but I have a sneaking suspicious most people who post on this site are expats or portenos who live very luxurious styles that I'm just not expecting or wanting as a 22 year old.

Don't forget the servicio de mesa that 99% of restaurants in BA charge. This is an additional 6-12 pesos per person, for the sheer privilege of using their plates and silverware.

Don't let the nay-sayers get you down. Of course the things they write are true and the apparent negativity is expressed purely out of concern for your well-being but you have demonstrated your adaptability and resourcefulness and I'm sure you will get along fine. Better than fine - have a brilliant time!

Whoa! What year is your Lonely Planet from? 2004? Estilo Campo for 17-45 pesos is not going to happen. La Lechuza tampoco.

For a better idea of prices use the local restaurant guide:

El Desnivel: $60 lunch / $69 dinner
http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/restaurantes/El-Desnivel-898

Estilo Campo: $88 pesos lucnh / $120 pesos dinner: http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/restaurantes/Estilo-Campo-396

La Lechuza: $49 lunch / $49 dinner:

I'm just realising why so many people who come get actually angry that Buenos Aires isn't as cheap as it's "supposed to be" -- they're being told by guidebooks like LP that they can go to Estilo Campo for a 1/3 of what it actually costs -- of course they're shocked when they get here. Even annual updates to books can't keep up with inflation here -- especially with meat jumping 15-20% every quarter...

The budget is not realistic. What would most worry me is that you don't seem to have any margin for the unforeseen. People get robbed often, computers break, prices just keep going up. I hope you're coming with a few thousand dollars.

As for the company, are they offering a unique experience to have drawn college grads from around the world with a salary that can't even provide a middle class lifestyle in BA? Argentines your age mostly still live with their parents which is why they can survive on a salary like yours. Will they be adjusting your salary for government reported inflation or real inflation?

The experience will certainly be worth a lot, but I really hope you are prepared to live in a city with US prices on $16K. I'd be very worried if my 21 year old was trying to do it.

And double again before he can buy an updated version of the guidebooks!

5000 gross is a very good starting salary here in BA. As many others have mentioned, you should not count on having that much in hand, taxes are very high here.
Do you have bills from back home, such as student loans? That could be an issue.

I rent a furnished apartment and I have lived here for a year. I make much less than 5000 gross but I do run 2 side businesses that pay in US dollars. However, that income basically allows me to save and do extra stuff. You will be able to live off 5000 but not in luxury!

I am 24, so I assume if you are a recent college grad we are of similar age and thus I understand the lifestyle you are probably used to. If you have any particular questions, feel free to contact me.

Now some serious figures about the situation now

Burger and fries at Gibraltar = 30 peso
Burger, Fries and coke at Carlitos, Acasuso = 42 peso
Spaghetti and mondo spaghetti = 35 peso
Thai plate at Gibraltar = 40 peso
Burrito and coke at CBC = 37 peso
Mac menu = 40 peso
BKK burger menu = 40 peso
Pizza at casa bar = 45 peso
Really poor plate of fries at Alamo = 30 peso
Take out pizza Calabresa at my favorite place(probally about 10/15 peso cheaper if you shop around) = 52 peso

Restaurants bill run probally between 70 and 120 peso

Here's what my 21 year old, who has recently lived among expats your age, says she would need monthly to live the comfortable but far from privileged life in BA that her friends here live:

Rent (share safe, clean but not luxe furnished apt)$700
Food and grocery store items............................$300
Restaurants (4X/wk, 2 cheap, 2 average)............$200
Snacks/coffee.................................................$100
Going out modestly for age group.......................$200
Transportation, cell, incidentals..........................$200
Short trips with friends every other mo. (saving)...$100

Total...............................................................$1800 or $7200 pesos

Note this is without clothes, household needs, taxis or any real travel while in LAM. $9-10K would begin to get much more comfortable.

While $5K pesos is a good salary for a young Argentine, keep in mind many don't pay rent and eat with their parents often, and many work in negro.
