Job Offer in Buenos Aires

Here's what my 21 year old, who has recently lived among expats your age, says she would need monthly to live the comfortable but far from privileged life in BA that her friends here live:

Rent (share safe, clean but not luxe furnished apt)$700
Food and grocery store items............................$300
Restaurants (4X/wk, 2 cheap, 2 average)............$200
Snacks/coffee.................................................$100
Going out modestly for age group.......................$200
Transportation, cell, incidentals..........................$200
Short trips with friends every other mo. (saving)...$100

Total...............................................................$1800 or $7200 pesos

Note this is without clothes, household needs, taxis or any real travel while in LAM. $9-10K would begin to get much more comfortable.

While $5K pesos is a good salary for a young Argentine, keep in mind many don't pay rent and eat with their parents often, and many work in negro.

700 US for a shared apart? Seems pricy. Otherwise, pretty on the ball.

Agreed - 700 seems high to me for a shared apt (1400 for a 2 BR would get you a nice apt). If the OP is willing to live with people, he will be paying a lot less, esp if he shares an apt with someone who has access to a guarantia.

The rest seems about right.

I think 1100 dollar non-rent is a bit high.

You should be able to live fairly well with 100 peso a day if you also work. I am guessing that most expats are not spending 100 peso a day.

Whoa! What year is your Lonely Planet from? 2004? Estilo Campo for 17-45 pesos is not going to happen. La Lechuza tampoco.

For a better idea of prices use the local restaurant guide:

El Desnivel: $60 lunch / $69 dinner
http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/restaurantes/El-Desnivel-898

Estilo Campo: $88 pesos lucnh / $120 pesos dinner: http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/restaurantes/Estilo-Campo-396

La Lechuza: $49 lunch / $49 dinner:
http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/restaurantes/Social-La-Lechuza-6406

Well, I just searched for parillas and posted the first results I found. It's not a guide a I own but just lonely planet's website, which has not been updated in quite some time I guess.

The fact remains that the people who make the salary I will be making for the company have told me they live fine. Here I receive mixed opinions, but most of these are heresay. I know it might not be easy, but I'm going to go for it.

The negative comments in the past two pages are far more critical than the advice I received in the first 14, where the vast majority said I'd be able to live on 4150 net, although not luxuriously of course. I appreciate the concern though.

Well, some of these figures are far from consistent with what I've been told in this thread and my those who at my company.

For instance.

Groceries:
Guy at my company: 100-150 pesos/wk (and said he eats a lot)
My budget: 200 pesos/wk
Your estimate: 300 pesos/wk

Rent (shared):
Guy at my company: 300 pesos/wk for shared 2 person 70 m^2 flat
My budget: 375 pesos/wk
Your estimate: 700 pesos/wk

Transportation, Cell, Incidentals:
My budget: 144 pesos/wk (including transport, gym, cell, toiletries, misc)
Your estimate: 205 pesos/wk

I am going to have to seriously dispute the grocery bill part here.......yesterday at Supermercado Disco on Callo & Entre Rios, I bought, 1 kg of chicken breast, 1 kg of wheat bread, a tube of toothpaste, two 1 serving envelopes of cat food, 1 small envelope of garlic powder, a 300gr pack of shredded cheese, a 400gr pack of bread crumbs, one 400gr container of margarine, and a 1/2 dozen eggs.......for a grand total of $148 pesos, this was including a 10% discount for paying with a debit card. This is enough for 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners however I had to spend an additional $45 pesos for the vegetables for salads and to accompany the chicken breasts. So here you have enough food for 4 meals NOT counting the olive oil, spices and other ingredients that I had at home already. Groceries are NOT cheap in Buenos Aires capital federal and if you think they are, you are in for a BIG budget surprise.

My grocery purchases total several multiples of the OP's grocery budget, but I don't think his numbers are off.

Pasta costs <$4 pesos/500g. 500g of pasta = 4 meals. Or $1 per meal. Add a bit of olive oil and salt & pepper and done. Breakfast, 2 fried eggs and a piece of toast ($1.50)

You can eat cheaply here, but you won't be eating well.

That's a strange, yet still effective, way of describing the location. ;)

Thanks for the heads up, I guess I should have said Callao between Bartolomé Mitre & Rivadavia to be exact!

500gr of pasta (approx 1lb&1oz) is enough for FOUR MEALS?? Maybe if its a side dish next to a nice helping of chicken, beef or fish. I can't imagine an adult eating that for 4 meals and not being hungry all the time or malnourished. What about salad, vegetables, and olive oil which costs at minimum $35 - $40 a liter (33.6 oz) ?
