Sounds accurate.

Well if thats accurate, I'll just do a lot of cooking at home. It seems like restaurants are outrageously priced there.

What about deli meats/cheese and sliced bread/rolls for sandwiches?

$100 pesos a week in the supermarket just isn't realistic now. I would say at least $200 per week if you are planning on eating at home for most meals.

I eat vegan, cook at home, consume about a quarter of what most dudes do, and even I can't survive on $100 a week. I suppose it's possible if you are willing to be very spartan, but it's neither healthy nor pleasant to live on plain pasta and rice. You can cut costs significantly by making beans and grains the bulk of your meals, and limiting items such as cheese and meat, but still, you need to leave a little room in the budget for flavor, variety and antojos (and vino.)

For up-to-date prices on menu items around the city, I suggest checking out the BA Delivery website. There you can see what a restaurant meal -- empanadas, parrilla, Chinese, what-have-you -- would actually cost you right now.

Not sure where the 100 pesos/wk came from. I budgeted 200/wk. I'll check out BA Delivery

Now some serious figures about the situation now

Burger and fries at Gibraltar = 30 peso
Burger, Fries and coke at Carlitos, Acasuso = 42 peso
Spaghetti and mondo spaghetti = 35 peso
Thai plate at Gibraltar = 40 peso
Burrito and coke at CBC = 37 peso
Mac menu = 40 peso
BKK burger menu = 40 peso
Pizza at casa bar = 45 peso
Really poor plate of fries at Alamo = 30 peso
Take out pizza Calabresa at my favorite place(probally about 10/15 peso cheaper if you shop around) = 52 peso

Restaurants bill run probally between 70 and 120 peso
Get out of Palermo (and San Telmo). Entire meal in a restaurant in a weekday: 35-42 pesos, including bread, main dish, drink and coffee and/or dessert.

What kind of restaurant? Sushi? Thai? French? Spanish? Vietnamese? Indian?

For 35 pesos I'm sure its just boring confiteria food. I'd rather cook at home...

$5000 is plenty if that's gross--though I would consider looking for a roommate, learning the bus system (as opposed to taxis) and let go of the idea of casually going out to lunch every day.

For those of you who say there's no way you can live on that here, I'm not sure what you're smoking or how many luxuries you can't live without. My wife and I live on about $6000 pesos per month, we have a car, two dogs (about $200 pesos per month in only dog food) we go out to eat for dinner once per week or so, and usually get out of the city on the weekends, and I'm a wine drinker :)

We live in zona norte, a ways out of the center, so perhaps our rent is cheaper, but we rent a 2 bedroom duplex with a carport and a small garden for about $2000 per month.

Perhaps it's because I used to be a financial planner, but I really don't feel like I'm "missing out" on anything.

Each or both? 6k for the two of you with a car (which I assume runs on fuel and is insured) is very impressive! Congrats

Alright, a kilo of broccoli should be good for 4 meals at least, and I think i read a kilo of chicken was around 18 pesos, also good for 4 meals.

Thus, would four meals of chicken, broccoli, and pasta and cost around 18+8+4 = 30 pesos, or about 7.5 pesos per meal. Sound accurate?

This does not include spices or sauces, which would probably be more of a one time purchase for many meals.

You can get chicken for about 10 pesos a kilo but that's a whole chicken with bones and all, and it will weigh at least 2.5 kilos. Broccoli is 6 pesos a kilo but only about 1/2 of that is edible because here most of the broccoli comes with tons of leaves and a giant stalk still attached. If you budget 175-200 pesos per week for food and other grocery items, (soap, detergent, paper goods, plus food) you should be able to manage fine on that. Less than that you could probably manage but your butt will be sore from the rough paper.

Well, some of these figures are far from consistent with what I've been told in this thread and my those who at my company.

For instance.

Groceries:
Guy at my company: 100-150 pesos/wk (and said he eats a lot)
My budget: 200 pesos/wk
Your estimate: 300 pesos/wk

Rent (shared):
Guy at my company: 300 pesos/wk for shared 2 person 70 m^2 flat
My budget: 375 pesos/wk
Your estimate: 700 pesos/wk

Transportation, Cell, Incidentals:
My budget: 144 pesos/wk (including transport, gym, cell, toiletries, misc)
Your estimate: 205 pesos/wk

Sorry to be picky Xeneizes, but I'd try asking a woman at your company rather than a man -- I'm just being honest, but most Argentine men have no clue as to how much money is spent on food in their houses because they aren't the ones doing the shopping.

He is British, lives with another guy (friend), and presumably shops for himself.

The American woman from the company says I can live fine on 4150, but I didn't ask about specific costs.
