Locks

Just a word of caution,,,,,Unless you AND your neighbours know and trust the locksmith I would suggest you buy the lock or locks yourself and have a locksmith install it or them. I have an Argentine friend that moved into a really Great apartment in a really SWANKY! building and had a locksmith change all of the locks...While the locksmith was doing his job he said he needed the keys to the old lock so he handed the guy his keychain. The locksmith needed to go to his truck to get some tools. He returned in a few minutes and installed the new locks, and as a courtesy checked all of the locks on the windows. He finished his work and EVEN wiped down all of the areas where he worked......a very friendly guy, chatting , bullshitting, yeah boca! "you must work long hours" etc......by now you must know where this story is going, but if you don't I have a bridge in New York that I would like to sell to you! He moved in, the decorators finished all....3 weeks later he came home fromwork and ALL was gone.......The guy went to his truck and copied his keys, gave him a FREE window check to scope out the apartment and came back while he was at work(((((Knowing his schedule IE the chum chatter!))))) and returned!!!! There is nothind here like a BONDED locksmith.....I could be arrested 20 times for burgulary and still be a locksmith!!!!!! First....use common sence! Second.....use common sence!!!!

I am sure I don't have to say this, but if the robbers REALLY want to get into your apartment, and there are tons of locks, security cameras, "puerta blindada" and everythinng else, what they will do is wait for you to come home and while you are opening the door, pull a gun out and make you open the door. It's too much trouble for them to break your door open and it's easier for you to open it with. I have 2 very good friends who are police officers here. This is what they have told me.
1) Put an alarm company sticker on your front door even if you don't have an alarm system.
2) Get good locks, the best (in Argentina) are the old fashioned kind with the brass keys.
3) When you walk into your building, before you approach the door, have your keys ready, look around you, and if anybody is by the door NO MATTER HOW innocent they look don't go in if you are alone especially at night.
4) When you get off the elevator, if there are blind spots in the hallway look around before starting to open the door to your apartment.
5) Don't walk to the door of your building wearing headphones listening to loud music or gabbing on the cell phone. STAY ALERT IN THE STREET.
6) If you are confronted, offer all of your valuables to them before they can get into your place. It's much worse for you if they do get in.
7) When you leave home CLOSE and lock ALL windows, balcony doors, no matter how small or large they are.
8) If someone rings your bell either from the street or directly at your apartment NEVER open without verifying who it is.
9) If someone rings your bell, and says fire, electrical emergency, or any other "emergency" make your you verify this somehow before opening the door. This is a new tactic to get into peoples apartments according to my police officer friends. The robbers ring your bell, say there is a broken pipe/electrical emergency/medical emergency, etc. Don't open, say you are calling the police, or fire department and if they go away when you say that then you know it's a scam.
10) Secure your door, get an alarm, make the security visible, because if they are just simple robberies, they will go to another door if yours looks too difficult to break open. They want fast in and out.
11) If your apartment can easily be seen from the street, move LCD TVs, valuable art, big cristal chandeliers to areas that can't be seen, or cover your windows with curtains. Many robbers will first take inventory from outside before deciding who to rob.
12) If you lose your keys, including the building entrance key, make sure you tell the management, so they can change it. It costs a few dollars or pesos but better to secure the entrance door.
I really hate the way this sounds, but unfortunately it's todays reality and until the world heals sadly it's what we have to live with to protect ourselves.
