Guys,

I am looking to purchase these food items anywhere in Capital Federal but preferably in Palermo.

1. Goat Meat - do we have butcher shops here who have fresh caracas and where you can walk in and ask them to cut certain peaces for you? Or just a meat shop selling Goat meat?

2. Cottage Cheese? What is its name in ARgentina? Where to buy it?

3. Cayenne Pepper - Whats its name here? Where to buy it?

4. Asafoetida - What is its name here? Where to buy it?

5. Dry Tamarind - where to buy it?

6. Wild Rice - what is its name here. Where to buy it? ( I have seen brown rice in shops..but wild rice is really quite a black colored rice very easily avbl in US stores)

7. Lady Fingers or Okra - what do you call it here. Where to buy it

Thanks ( will add if I can think of any new item)

2 -> Look for "requeson" or "queso cottage" or simply "ricota" (http://es.wikipedia....g/wiki/Requesón)

3 -> Pimienta de Cayena (http://articulo.merc...cayena-rojo-_JM)

6-> Arroz salvaje or arroz silvestre? (http://articulo.merc...-origen-usa-_JM = damn expensive!!)

Can't help more

Certainly no expert in the subject but here it comes:

1. Goat = cabra / cabrito. "Cabra" as in demanding milk/cheese, "cabrito" as in meat.
AFAIK, people get hold of a cabrito on special occasions and grill them. Can't think of you being able to order a special cut anywhere since if it doesn't fit the regular local cuts then some part of the animal would be ruined for the rest. Very likely it's an animal you need to pre-order.
Will ask some friends that do eat them on special occasions.

2. Again, couldn't find a familiar translation. What I found it referred to is "requesón" which is a NOA speciallty mostly, and must be eaten fresh. Made of goat milk. This can be found with luck at certain supermarkets every now and then or regional markets/fairs. Ricotta doesn't fit the exact bill but certainly looks the part but "queso cottage" is not unknown, so maybe a good Delicatessen shop might be able to help.

3. Pimienta de Cayena is your ticket.

5. Tamarindo disecado / en polvo? Chinatown or a good Dietética is my best bet. Plan B: El Gato Negro.

6. Arroz Salvaje: Again Chinatown or Dietética

The have entire frozen goats at coto and disco sometimes. Ive also on occasion see cuts of goat in disco near the rabbit and the lamb

there is no cottage cheese. ricotta, obviously, in nothing like cottage cheese.
goat should be available.

asofetida is from Afghanistan, and is mostly used in bengali cooking. neither is very common in Argentina, and my guess is its not here.

chinatown is your best bet for tamarind and wild rice- but real wild rice is mostly from Minnesota, and, again, there is no community here to demand it, and very little chance you will find it.

Requeson, ricotta, and cottage cheese are not any where near the same thing. You won't find cottage cheese here, but if you truly are desperate you can make it.
Casa Polti by the Mercado de Belgrano on Juramento and Ciudad de La Paz usually has wild rice, cayenne and possibly dried tamarind.
Inside the Mercado de Belgrano there are a few butchers who advertise goat. Start with the "Granja de Sergio." He carries armadillo and jabali. He could at least order goat I would imagine. And I have seen okra at the big verduleria next to his stall on the corner, but I can't recall when... You may also want to try a trip to the Mercado del Progresso on Rivadavia y Del Barco Centenera which is much larger. Good luck!

Hey -- have a look through this thread for suggestions on carnicerias. For goat, try the one across from Pierino at Lavalle in Almagro -- its listed in this thread: http://baexpats.org/topic/17020-good-butcher-and-granja-near-hollywood/page__hl__carniceria#entry130693

Also there is a (relatively) new carniceria on LM Campos: http://www.carnescaranegra.com/ -- I haven't yet made an order with them but they have Lamb at very good prices and I think they had goat on the site as well. Planning on getting some lamb next week for the husbands birthday so will let you know about quality.

Wild Rice they do occasionally have in Barrio Chino -- it's a bit hit and miss there, and sometimes they'll have it for months on end and then you won't see it again for ages etc.
