Short rental in Manhattan for only 4 days? The real estate value is sky high as the skyscrapers there! So no good deal to be found.
Will recommend Motels in the boroughs surrounding the Big Apple, in the Bronx,Queens,Staten Island,Brooklyn etc.
If you go to Long Island as far as Oyster Bay is doable...And as Nikad-san saz, perhaps across the Hudson river into Jeysee!

Manhattan and cheap never go in the same sentence. Even the hostels are expensive and they're really dirty. Stay in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn (one subway stop from East Village, Manhattan) or in Astoria, Queens. Both gorgeous neighborhoods just a few minutes from Manhattan.

I know August in NY will be like living hell, but I'm a desert person and been there before during the Summer. Besides, it was the absolute only time I could take some off work.

About other locations, I figured that after a long day of walking around I'd rather prefer to stay in a closer location, but I'll look around some of your suggestions.

Still, when I said cheap I didn't mean $60/night. I was thinking more on the $150/200 range.

I just saw this watching the Today Show. The Jane Hotel has an offer of room for $105/night during the summer. It's located east of the Meat Packing District and north of West Village.

Google for Hotels in Hoboken , The Garden City of NJ , Check W. Hoboken Hotel has deals for $200 great views of the NY Skyline. 5 minutes bus ride to Midtown !

I stayed at east village appartments. It is on East 3rd street and 2 nd Ave. You can find them on trip advisor. It's about 350 per night.

Thanks! I saw this hotel before, it seems quite nice but those $105 rooms are w/ shared bathrooms which I don't mind but my travel buddy does
