interesting how the range can be so wide, from as little as 60,000 to 70,000 to as high as almost 2 million.

wall st journal says "tens of thousands". daily mail uk says "as many as one million" in the article body and "up to two million" in the title page.

whatever the number, it was significant. and i think the most disturbing part is not the number of people but the fact that these americans are being demonized and dismissed as right wing conservatives/nut jobs or flat out racists. nothing could be further from the truth. and to say anything else is only an attempt to draw attention away from what they are protesting against.

protesting anything these days in the US is now looked down upon. any dissent of any kind, especially anything anti obama is immediately dismissed and demonized as being a right wing or racist.

it's incredible how the media openly mocks and belittles the tea party protesters. what ever happened to non biased reporting? it's quite scary, especially the level of fanaticism, cult of personality and indoctrination that is occurring.

it's like criticizing israel. god forbid you say anything against israel before you are labled anti semitic.

interesting times.

Redrum - Whilst not an American, I follow American politics closely, and your arguments hold up in exactly the same way when protests were made against the Bush Presidency and his antics - Certain Press, slammed all the protesters as left-wing nut jobs - seems to be the divide between left and right, both in the populace, and in the press, is not a gap, but a gulf...

And, believe me, the UK Daily Mail makes Fox News look like a bunch of pinko commies!

It is sad, and it is dangerous. With such huge populations and great interconnectedness as we have (or suffer, or endure) in the present day, full and accurate information is essential. Regrettably, more and more journalists appear both inarticulate and unreflective, save of their own biases.

How many marched is not the issue but the issue is that there is huge amount of people who do not believe in the way that the USA is headed. There is no difference between Democrats and Republicans and when you see the bigger picture it becomes clear that there is a lot to protest for.

Too many people try to silence others with using the trump card of discrimination ie anti african american, anti semitic, anti muslim , anti ..........,

The ultimate discrimination is and always be silencing those who dare to speak out.

I am against silcencing folks for wanting to speak up and am glad people speak up here, no matter what they say, and not silenced by moderators. Anything goes is good.

A huge amount, in this case, being represented by 70,000 or so.
Contrast that with the 700,000 to 1 Million who showed up for the Gay Pride Parade this year in San Francisco- thats even a HUGER amount!

or, lets contrast that 70,000 with the 66 Million PLUS who voted for Obama.

The fact is, the amount of people at these extreme protests, while HUGE by the standards of some, is a tiny, tiny percentage of the american population.

Most people believe in the way the USA is headed- in fact, Obama's current polls are all over 49%, mostly higher- here is a link to several different polls, by different pollsters, for this week. His job approval is going UP.

There is no doubt that a radical fringe of wingnuts hates any government, any time. But the lackluster numbers at this rally would tend to prove, to me, that there is no huge groundswell of opposition. In my county, with about 120,000 people, when they had their last, bigger TeaBag rally, a couple of hundred people showed up. That means only 119,800 were either ambivalent or in favor of Obama. These numbers were pretty representative of the Fox News inspired rallies across america.

Meanwhile, the insurance industry is spending $700,000 a day to defeat health care reform.

"no difference between the Dem's and the Republican's " yeah right!

Ries....

I think you’re a little off base here.

The 70,000 protestors do NOT represent all of the citizens who are unhappy with our country’s direction. the 70,000 were mainly protesting the proposed health care bill. sorry but Pericles is right when he says that a huge amount of people in the US are against the direction of the country right now.

we can sit here and talk numbers all you want. you say 70,000 is a small amount yet the number could be as high as 2 million - whatever the amount, it is significant. Protesting is important. the people that take the time to travel to DC to protest will always be a smaller percentage of the REAL amount of people who are against obama's policies. Throughout history, it is always a much smaller group that rebels, protests or fights tyranny. We need only look at our founding fathers for the best example of this.

And no, they are NOT extreme protests. These people are NOT extremists. They are NOT “radicals”, “wing nuts”, right wings, racists or whatever you want to call them. Stop putting a label on them. They are Americans who are concerned about their country and their standard of living. And they have every right to protest and be heard without being dismissed, demonized or labeled as extremists. Shame on you!!

We are seeing protests in the US the likes of which haven’t been seen since the Vietnam war. You are seeing people getting furious and visibly, openly angry at the government and its policies. we have not seen these kinds of divisions for decades.

Let’s take your figure of 66 million voters. So what? That still isn’t a majority of over 300 million Americans. AND, of those 66 million, many have regretted voting for him. Why? Because they were sold a bill of goods. Because he said one thing but has done another. Because he is no different than Bush. Because he lied.

You say obama’s current polls are over 49%. So what? Just 2 weeks ago it was 42%. Obama has the fastest job approval decline since Carter. Carter is widely regarded as being our worst president by the way.

http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/zogby_obama_poll/2009/08/31/254617.html

“A majority of likely voters (53%) believe the U.S. headed in the wrong direction, with 38% saying right direction.”

So please, do not base your assumptions of the opposition to obama solely on the number of protestors at the DC march. Remember that the media lies through omission. The opposition groundswell is much greater than what the mainstream press reports.

nancy,

there is a great article you should read by larry flynt called Common Sense 2009. in short:

"Both Democrats and Republicans dance to the tune of their corporate masters. In America, corporations do not control the government. In America, corporations are the government.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-flynt/common-sense-2009_b_264706.html

when Pericles says there is no difference between democrat vs republican - what is he saying is that both sides work for the same team. sure, they have differences in rhetoric or policies/philosophies but it ends there.

it doesn't matter who wins the presidency today - dem or repub because both parties are controlled by as larry flynt states - wall street, mega corporations and the super rich. these are the groups that control our country, not obama and his cabinet.

let's be 100% clear on this. obama is an employee of these groups and nothing more. he is a brand. he is an actor. he is a pitchman who has been hired to sell the agenda of these groups to the american people and the world at large. he is a senator who served a half term and is now president of the free world.

let us be clear. we are against obama for the same reasons we were against bush - because neither work for the american people. we must break the false - left politics vs right politics - paradigm in order for us to see our common enemy and defeat them......easier said than done of course.
