I've read in a few places about having to book at least a month in advance. Out of interest, what's the longest ahead you can book a wedding? Would 6 months be possible?

Six months, I don't think so. I have heard that one month before (28 days) is the the day you should book it... you want to do it as soon as you can of course. You can even book it online and there I've heard it can be 40 days before. You'll need your DNI/passport. You also have to do the medical checkup within 7 days before the union and present your witnesses' DNIs 3 days before along with all the other paperwork.

I checked online -using fake info- , and as of tonight, I can book the civil ceremony for December 12 (the earliest) to January 10 (the latest.) Online is slightly different than in person, I think in person you can't go as far ahead - but best to call or visit your registro civil and see what they say.

Congratulations! I was married in Argentina and am presently going through a divorce here. Despite the fact that we are divorced in the US, we have property here and therefore our divorce is not valid till we divide our assets in Argentina. A word for the wise.... if you own property or if you buy property after your marriage - make sure that the "escritura" clarifies "bienes propios" - that is if you are putting money into an asset that is your own money and in the case of a divorce do not want to split it with your soon to be ex... make sure that it is spelled out in this document. The bureaucratic non-sense that I am going through in this country is ridiculous. I have been here since March of 2010 just to take care of these details in order to validate my divorce, and I'm still not finished.
I don't mean to put a damper on such a wonderful moment of your lives... but it's better to be informed than to be sorry. I feel that my ex-Argie husband has taken me for the ride of my life and gotten away with highway robbery due to my lack of information.
