Hi there,

I am a New Yorker needing a massive change of scenery and I would love to move to Buenos Aires.

I have been actively researching medical programs in BA with no success.

If there anyone on BAExpats who is familiar with the educational system, please reply to this thread, or email me at [email protected].

Some of the questions I have:

What are the names of the medical schools in Buenos Aires?

Are there any medical schools that instruct in English?

What are the requirements for admission?

What is the general tuition for medical school in Buenos Aires?

Thanks so much in advance.

I can't answer all the questions you listed, but I'll mention two med schools that I know about thru a family friend:

Universidad de Buenos Aires (http://www.uba.ar/): I'm pretty sure it's regarded as the best med schoool here. But it has seen better days. Apparently their facilities are in bad shape.

Universidad Catolica (http://www.uca.edu.ar/index.php/home/index/es): Nice modern campus by BA standards, but it's a new program and due to their beliefs the use of corpses for instruction is off-limits.

That's all I know, but hopefully it'll give you a starting point.

If it's a public Medicine School (called Facultad de Medicina) is FREE. Yes. As it should be always: education must be free of charge.
And in general that's the best education.

I´m going to warn you, in case you´re thinking of a getting a medicine degree down here and then going back up to the states. You will not be able to practice medicine in the states, right after getting a degree here. No residency will take you, and even if you do your residency here, they still probably won´t take you in the states. Maybe a really ghetto crappy STD testing center would.

aside from that, there is Universidad de Buenos Aires. Free, well known, no money, poor education (my dad is a graduate of UBA medicine), full of foreigners who will eventually go back to their own country, and extremely complicated. Take my word for it, do NOT do this to yourself.

My cousin finished her degree at Universidad Favaloro (the guy who ¨invented¨ the bipass lolol) which is private and a much better idea than UBA. http://www.favaloro.edu.ar/

or UAI, where I almost did my masters

http://www.uai.edu.ar/facultades/default.asp

if you want to know how much they cost, then email them directly and they will send you a not very informative email with the costs and other things. But it wont be very expensive. To enter, you just have to apply and/or pay, it´s not like in the states where you have to compete with asian people who have perfect grades and extracurriculars to get in.

I hope you can speak Spanish. Otherwise you´re in for a quilombo.

If you can't speak totally perfect and fluent Spanish (I assume not as you asked if there are any programs in English).... totally forget about this pipe dream of going to medical school in Argentina.

braytrain is totally correct. Not many respectable residency programs in the USA will consider you.

I'd say if you need a change of scenery move out of NY and move to another area. There are plenty of radically different areas in the USA vs. New York.

I didn't know UCA had a medical school. WHERE did you get the idea that the Catholic Church opposes corpses used for medical instruction? Maybe you are thinking of Islam?

The Universidad del Salvador (USAL) also has a medical program last I knew.
Years ago I met a couple of Canadian brothers who were attending the med school at la UBA. Not sure how things turned out for them.

Hey. I think you need to talk to George Castro, M.D. He has Clinica Itzmana in the corner of Second Avenue and 21st st in Manhattan. The actual address is 359 2nd Av. He teaches at Beth Israel. He is From Nicaragua, studied medicine in Guadalajara Mexico and he is very active in helping foreign trained doctors prepare and pass their qualification boards in the US. He can give you the pros and cons of studying medicine abroad.
We used to belong to the same Hispanic association and he was my family doctor.
