Media Law

I didnt know till last year, when my mother bought a house, that in BsAs province there are a lot of Cable operadores, different from Cablevision. I have Cablevision in my home, but my mother has Antina, which does not have any Channel of Grupo Clarin, only Canal 13. Not Tyc, not Volver, not TN, etc, and it has a lot of clients. And its a small - medium size company, sure there are lots of that in the south, in the west, Conurbano is huge.

Ahhh, so then surely what we are going to see is that those anti govt channels (TN etc) ARE indeed going to disappear....

Silencing the opposition?

In a country monopolized by the anti-democratic mob called Peronism, ...call them what you like, the Clarin group was the only counter weight left ..now there really will be no opposition anymore. Jorge Lanata is next on their list of targets. Nestor's dream is becoming a reality.

Hey Dublin,

I was under the impression that the law guaranteed percentages for public and private ownership, and then put limits on the number of licenses any one operator may hold. I don't have time to look at the details tonight, but you seem to have a fresher perspective than I do. Do you know the details?

I do think that a guaranteed public/private mix would help ensure diversity of opinions, and that is how I read the law. Again to reiterate, I think the critics here are being very short-sighted. The K's will (thankfully) be gone in a couple of years and we have to look at the effects of this law long-term.

It s not going to disappear. Cablevision will be cut in half or something but wont disappear. People will choose their cable operator according to what they like. There are a lot of cable operators that have TN, and Clarins channels as Directv or others, and I suppose that the same way I found Antina would be other cable operatos like that that dont.

Kudos to DirecTV, they are quick. Just got a text offering me free installation!

I used to have fun in the uk with an old sky dish, You could move it about and receive 1000s of channels from all over Europe for free. Granted most were not in English but it was great fun picking up signals from space. :)

DirectTV uses Galaxy 3C at 95.0°W

There are 2 other sats i could find for south america.

Galaxy 28 at 89.0°W

Which appears to be mostly live feeds and requires a big dish here.

SES6 at 40.5°W

Is more interesting for Brits as it carries http://www.bfbs.com/
Which includes bbc one, itv sky etc. although they are of course encrypted. Good luck finding a decoder for them. Its much easier just to stream the real channels through a uk proxy.
It also carries a large number of unencrypted channels from all over Latin America, so no subscription needed for them.

Ed / Matias - I'll bet you all the beer you can drink that no new cable operator carries the TN news channel.

FpV / Campora are not socialist/anti-private business, not at all, they are very pro private business as long as that private business is on their side or on the team so to speak. There is a good article on the bubblear.com about Kircher Capitalism.

http://bubblear.com/2013/09/cleared-to-land-welcome-to-kirchner-capitalism-enjoy-your-flight/

In the same way that private companies aligned to the govt sit in wait to sweep up if they can get rid of LAN, there will no doubt be cable entrepreneurs lined up to benefit.

Private business will fill that gap, but it will be team Campora private business. That's the trouble I have with all this, clientele capitalism will partner public propaganda machines to silence an opposing voice.

They have been rightly hammered for that, as an example of how they allowed themselves to be politically influenced. In comparison to media here and in South America the BBC is a fantastically impartial organisation.

Yes, obviously they have changed a lot since then. A fine example of great, independent, investigative journalism.

So Dublin, my question for you is:

If we assume your contentions, we can choose between:

1. A media industry dominated by clients of a corrupt government, and which includes Clarín.

2. A media industry dominated by Clarín alone.

Why is #1 better?

And btw switch your bet to all-you-can-drink Jameson's and I might entertain it.

Ah now you're making up contentions for me ; )

My contention is that choice is between

1. Monopoly plus govt propaganda - No thanks

2. Govt propaganda + clientele capitalism partner - No thanks

3. Govt propaganda plus independent media not including Clarin - Yay

This should be possible with the insertion of the appropriate articles in the media law to ensure opposing voices on air today and that balance is possible.
