Hi,

Could any of you tell me good ways to meet local women to date? I feel like I'm not aggressive enough for Porteñas because of the culture I was brought up in is different. I'd love to hear places and techniques that have been successful. I have fairly advanced Spanish skills.

I'd really appreciate if people didn't make this thread about how crazy Argentine women are, attractiveness compared to other country's women etc.

Thanks

Well, there are quite many places :

Bahrein, it's a disco bar http://www.bahreinba.com/home.html

EL verde, reconquista 878, restaurant during the day, they play music at night

Amerika, it's a gay disco but you will find straight girls too and good looking ones

Rumi on thursday nights : they play 70/80s music, quite many people in their 40s but there are younger girls as well (I suspect some of them are "semi pros" though since I'm 40 and quite a few came up to me what usually doesn't happen unless I was especially attractive that night, lol)

Asia de Cuba in puerto madero : quite upscale disco, very good looking girls

Moliere, Chile 299 in San Telmo : restaurant/disco

There's another bar in the centro (forgot the name EDIT:I recall now, called La Cigale) owned by a french guy (he owns too Olsen and quite many places). On tuesday nights, there's the french night but it's not crowded with frenchies, mostly young foreigners and young argies. Quite easy to pick up there but it's small & crowded & noisy. It's not far from Kilkennys if I recall

El Unico in Palermo Soho : it's a bar opened 24/24. Very crowded but going there around 3/4 am is the perfect time to meet girls.

Apart of this, if you don't like going out and are looking into other ways of meeting girls, you can go to Greenpeace meetings, to the MALBA conferences at night, etc...

My best understanding is that local women are not really interested in men in bars. From what I've read, if you pick up a girl in a bar here you can expect to pay. If you want to meet real women to date you need to be introduced to them by their friends, so start by making male friends your own age, doing activities you enjoy (I know, I know, how quaint) and getting into a circle. It could be a school circle, a yoga circle, a music circle, a tango circle, art, books, language, go to Spanglish, start doing something interesting that shows an interest in staying for a while and people in general, not just 'girls' will find you interesting. Personally, I would never want to be dishonest, though not all daters feel that way. The main rule is that if you tell a local woman you are just here for a while to have an experience they don't really want to be the story you tell for the rest of your "real" life about how hot and crazy portenias are....

This is true:

I would add that you will "never ever" be approached by a woman here. If you don't have some real connection, don't bother trying to talk to a random woman unless you are prepared to go to extremes to simply maintain a conversation with this person that you don't know —which in and of itself seems like something you wouldn't want to do. Forget all the tactics you might normally try, get involved in activities, wait.

Exceptions to the "never ever" rule: you are extremely attractive; you are a foreigner; you meet an Argentine woman in another country.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice everyone! I am thinking of starting to take yoga classes since I've done that quite a bit in the US. I'm also looking into taking a class or two at UBA for fun, and to meet new people. Any other ideas would be welcome. It seems like they some might be interested in dating a norteamericano to improve their English?

Learn to be aggressive! Find your inner ravenous lion, grab your stones and forget the effeminate bull we grew up on in the states. Social circles are all well and good, but nothing ever "just happens"; strike up a conversation with any girl that catches your eye, in a park, restaurant, anywhere. So far, that philosophy has worked quite well for me. Why do you think guys here are so forward? The chicks dig it.

Its funny but I've noticed that what gets the most attention from the women here is just ignoring them. They are so used to Argentines shouting cheap pick up lines at them wherever they go that they can't stand it when they see a guy they are interested in who shows no interest for them.

I agree about picking up girls in a bar. You may not have to pay and don't assume that you'll have to, but you'll just be hooking up for one night.

About Amerika, the girls that are they are not looking to find a guy there. They are there because they can have a good time while not being harassed by 10 different guys at the same time like they would be if they went to a straight club.

Rumi has about 3 or 4 times as many guys as girls on any given night.
