Hey all,

My girlfriend and I are making the move from Dublin to BA in February of next year. Both just finished college in Trinity College Dublin and looking forward to making the move over. Were both going to be looking for work, teaching english or essentially anywhere we can get some hours! Would be great to hear back from anyone else from Ireland (or beyond!)

:)

Hi Cemma,

Welcome to the forum! :)

I'm a corkman, living here for the last few years. There are a few other paddies on the forum too - I expect they'll chime in too.
Next feb is a long way off - things might change a lot between now and then!

Anyway, feel free to fire any questions at me (or indeed the forum in general). There's a very helpful bunch here :)

My only advice would be move home, get a job, save like mad, then come here with as many dollars as humanly possible.

A local wage for teaching english will make life difficult, this really is no place to be stuck on a low income without a good few thousand dollars to back you up. Honestly, it will not be fun and you will not be able to socialise, eat out, live in a nice place on a new teachers wage. I have a good (+10 yrs exp) job in IT here, and if I had to pay rent and didnt have some backup euros, I'd be feeling the pinch.

If you could being 5k USD minimum each, it'll help. Otherwise I would think very carefully.

Also, if you cant speak Spanish, you have from now to Feb to learn as much as humanly possible. Anyway, be warned, seriously, I love living but would not be able to get by on a low local wage and no spanish. There are some miserable individuals here attempting to do the same.

Seriously like, money (USD, as much as possible) and Spanish. Otherwise maybe think about somewhere you can make a few quid then come here. UAE, Korea or somewhere like that.

Cavehill talks a lot of sense..

At the moment , i would only come here if I had some USDs backing me up and a decent wage.

Life is tough for peso earners at the moment and it will get worse before it gets better.

I'll chime in with the above as I moved from Dublin to Bsas in 2002 with a slight diversion via US when the grass was a lot greener - favourable cost of living lower sensation/ reality of crime. My husband arrived first, early 2002 and stayed in a serviced apartment opposite an old Spanish restaurant near Congreso called El Globo. As an appt resident he was able to avail of the dinner menu for lunch and thereby ate 3 courses, with half a bottle of wine and coffee for 12 pesos. Those days are long gone so it’s important you do some searches on this site re cost of living as many day to day items will be the same or even more expensive than Dublin (vegetables etc) – it seems to be the luxury items like private healthcare that are still a long standing bargain in Bsas but that still may be a shock to an Irishman having to pay for any healthcare in the first place.

Anyhow I’m not the best reference point as after 9ish years of excitement we left for Europe again mostly to raise our kids in a more secure environment akin to what I knew as a child but also to just soak up the wonders of Europe that we so missed. As young childless graduates your experience will be a rollercoaster of a different sort. I’d never say not come as we had an amazing time and have made lifelong friends which seems to one constant amongst all expats. We still run our company out of BsAs and Brazil and we’d be devastated not to have a reason or chance to go back. Save, research and plan. Those “XX on a shoe string” travel guides from my youth don’t reflect Bsas.

Pardon the reverse question, but how possible is it to save up money whilst living in Dublin? From the outside the statistics on wages/cost of living look pretty grim.

This is not to discount cavehill's excellent advice either. It is clearly very advisable to have a guaranteed income flow before arriving in BA. But I would be curious to hear about the economy over there.
