Mugged On Our Own Doorstep

No, I don't pay him for several reasons.
First, he's a parasite.
Second, he started harassing Adri for money when we first moved here so I read him the riot act and to never approach her again.
Third, I wouldn't be at all surprised that he was in cahoots anyway, but impossible to prove.
I have nothing against people who live in villas, but there happens to be a large one down the road where many of his friends live.
During the time we've lived here, I have hammered away at getting in and out of the house as quickly as possible and not loitering, but it's very difficult to cover all the angles.
I spoke to the neighbours about it and their replies can't be printed here.

I wonder if there is more crime than we know. I was burglarized, perhaps 2 months ago and friends learned there had been a home invasion in the house next door--right on the other side of their wall. He called the neighbors together to see if the neighborhood could work a plan to prevent it elsewhere and found out his other neighbors had been robbed as well. The man across the street had suffered not one but three robberies. They live in an upscale neighborhood. Apparently his neighborhood doesn't talk to each other for them not to know all that was going on in the neighborhood!

I am really sorry to hear this :( I think he just " let them work in peace " cos you are not paying for his services - that mainly consist in keeping his friends away - Are you going to report it to the police?

That sucks. I'm sorry to hear this but happy she wasn't hurt. That "security" guard would get a visit from me and lesson in MMA hand-to-hand fighting. I guarantee he wouldn't be back in his little shack for at least a month.

Yes, there is more crime than we know. A lot doesn't get reported because people don't trust the police.
Not wise to use ATM machines at 11:30 PM.

So sorry to hear this. I hope your Mom is alright.

Re: Arlean's point about crime and stats (if they know about it):

The other day I was walking down Sucre in Belgrano, and I heard a minor explosion. Evidently, a car's engine (or something) blew up, and the car caught on fire immediately. The driver frantically got an extinguisher from a cafe on the corner, and put the fire out. Meanwhile, I tried to call 911 -- but no one answered.

And that isn't the first time! Another time, upon leaving the Supermarket, some guy got angry with the cashier at the supermarket on my block and started throwing stuff against their glass window from the sidewalk. I managed to get out, but kept watching from outside. They were ignoring him, which made him more irate. He started beating against the glass with his fists... So, I obviously called 911 -- again, no answer.

I imagine there is more crime than they know about, simply because they don't even answer the phone when there's an emergency. Has anyone else experienced this?

Happened to me twice over the years. Still, the vast majority of the times I call, they pick up.

Awful.

Some family members had their house broken into and robbed last week. They're on vacation in Europe and apparently someone noticed.

It's hard to feel safe here when you constantly hear these stories.

It might be time for a truck's brakes to fail and to plow through the guard booth.

Worse comes to worse, you have to build a new guard booth... for the newly selected guard on the street.
