Just a question, why don't you get some plan, might be cheaper at the end. When I came I had some problems, got osde and next day I started using it (proved useful, since I made number of tests and saw many doctors in following months). Like this you can also call different places and maybe get faster appointment. Just a thought, maybe doesn't work for you...

I've got insurance back home that covers me 100% here (and elsewhere in the world) upon submission of receipts so at the moment there's no benefit in getting insurance here. I also figure places would provide faster/better service for cash as opposed to an insurance payment.

Nope, I went in asking to see a Urologist ASAP and was directed to the back of the ground floor where they have an emergency walk-in urologist clinic. I took a number and was seen quite smartish. I then settled it with my Swiss Medical.

Non-emergency care at Hospital Aleman can be tiring. And difficult to get an appointment. I usually don't have a problem with that - I don't like to go to the doctor anyway and making an appointment for something non-urgent doesn't bother me to wait. But like RichardRPTownley, the couple of times we've had urgent requirements (and once a full-blown emergency), we were taken care of right away.

Even with a plan (which I have) you can wait weeks for a turno, depending what it is you need. It also depends on how you go about it. HA has its central facility, but if you are a member, there are also a lot of doctors associated with the hospital, all over the city and province, particularly for specialities, that you can make appointments with on the website (or from the registry of doctors/clinics) and usually get an appointment even the next day.

Our youngest was interned in HA for two days last year. She had a private room, very clean and nice, and even had decent food, nurses came by every so often to check on her and make sure everything was good - it felt like a safe place. Since she was a minor, by law a relative had to stay with her.

But what I've seen in the public hostpitals, if you have to stay, it won't be nearly as nice. And you have to have someone stay with you, at least for part of the time, as there is no help to take care of you beyond whatever the doctor may order for medication (including food, clean sheets, etc).

BTW - having a chronic or developing issue is a lot different than an emergency. HA sees a lot of people both members and non-members. While I remember times in the past that HA was much more responsive on ordinary things, I have to say that I am very happy with how they take care of us when we've had real problems.

And I would submit that many people who can afford a visit but don't have a plan would prefer to pay the money than go to most public hostpitals here. Not just expats Maybe my inlaws don't go to the correct public hospitals, but the stories they tell me make me want to stay far away from them. HA is more resonably priced than Swiss Medical and OSDE as well, which is a reason it's popular with many expats and middle class folk.

All right, so what's your suggestion for non-emergency care then? The 540 pesos I paid for a consult is practically nothing compared to what it would cost to see a doctor in America, and my insurance will easily cover something more expensive... is there somewhere I could go where the consult is 2,000 pesos but I get VIP treatment and never have to wait more than 10 seconds for an appointment?

Now I understand, but sadly don't have experience with top level hospitals. Sure they exist, they have to. Also, it depends what you need, not every institution is good for everything (I almost learned the hard way). Also, it's not easy to get doctor that actually cares.. About the money I wouldn't be that sure, for them is all the same who pays them (if it's not in-house plan, probably). Good luck.

Just this, there are number of hospitals between public and alemán. I visited some public also, not the worst on the world, doctors are supposedly very good, just facilities are bad.

Having never needed any medical assistance whilst I was there, I can't really comment on quality/service, but I would imagine Sanitorio de los Arcos on Juan B Gusto (between Paraguay and Guatemala, Palermo Hollywood) might fit the bill for you. My friend gave birth to her daughter there (her partner is a diplomat so she was allowed to choose from a list of the best hospitals on her plan) and I know they were very happy, I believe Maradona has been a patient there and wasn't poor Nestor also a patient (though it seems it didn't do him much good)? I used to live nearby, and there would often be TV vans parked outside waiting for news on a celebrity patient, so if that's where the money goes I'd imagine they'd be able to help with a request like yours.

Its a trial en error for Example at the Swiss Medical , Aleman, Franco Suiza or Italiano. Which I visited the Emergency normally you get a very young lady doctor . The Specialists are available only after a lengthy wait. In Public Hospitals Emergency many times you see young doctors from Mercosur.

VIP treatment ??? If you need a Cardiologist suggest you Contact OSDE to see a Cardiologist as a perticular.
