In Castellano "americano" is everyone who comes from the Americas. It does not mean someone comes from the USA. It has - mostly - nothing to do with pride or whatsoever, but it has not the same meaning as in English.

Sorry Malbec, you are wrong....in Argentina americano does indeed mean a USA person...in Mexico, not true, and maybe in many other countries, not true, but here it is true...

Nahhh, not in Argentina. rentaplus, I am Argentine. Point me please to any newspaper article mentioning "americano". Maybe in Spain, but not in Argentina.

Sure, I have a quote for you. Guess from whom?

"Cuando poquísimos o casi ningún turista argentino venía acá, esto se llenaba y se sigue llenando de españoles, franceses, alemanes, americanos, ingleses que vienen a conocer o algunos otros que se van a El Chaltén ..."

Tsch, tsch, tsch...! How very gauche of "La Presidenta". The politically correct name would be "estadounidenses de norteamerica".

Igor - that was very funny, thank you! And I will say that conversationally, my porteño friends alway use "americana/o" when describing someone from the US. I have never heard someone say "estadoundiense" when talking. And when they are discussing brazilians or mexicans or hatians, etc - they don't call them america/o.
