New Iphone

Another idea is to maybe consider taking a little break & heading northwards to 'TAX FREE' Ciudad del Este (maybe you haven't been to Cataratas del Iguazu yet) you only buy in the established shopping centers etc. You can buy almost anything, go empty handed, don't take any electronic devices, buy them there. Stick it to the totalitarian K Regime by putting stickers on you new laptop (that you will pass on to someone who needs it here) & start to use your new iphone before you cross back through the Argentinian Aduanas. Import all your contacts & personal data onto all your new purchases & leave the boxes behind. Only keep receipts & warranties obviously. If anyone asks you anything, you're just a happy tourist couple on vacations who don't speak Spanish :p . You can fly for around US$500p/p or you can go by coach for AR$510p/p each way (16x Hour ride!). Good luck. ;)
A bit of a quick video tour:

iPhones are not and will not be sold by any official dealer:

El iPhone de Apple volverá a estar ausente en todas sus versiones; mientras la compañía no tenga presencia en Tierra del Fuego importar los dispositivos los haría pagar un impuesto que los dejaría a un precio muy alto.

If you go to the Apple website, the three Argentine phone companies are listed as dealers- which probably dates back 2 or 3 years, to before this last round of import restrictions.

Tom, your last resort could be Mercadolibre.
I did a quick search and found numerous 4S models.
There are more than 9 ways to skin a cat as you know and some of these vendors are pretty imaginative on ML.

Thank you all. I guess my original question should have been [background=rgb(252, 252, 252)]Is it possible to buy a new iPhone from Apple in pesos and get a deal. And I guess the answer is NOOO. I was able to buy a TV set for a reasonable price because of the blue rate so I extended that thinking.[/background]

[background=rgb(252, 252, 252)]It was just a thought. Tom[/background]

You can't buy iPhones from Apple here period. They refused to sign the agreement to produce their phones in tierra del Fuego and therefore they are not allowed to sell their handsets in Argentina. There's a lot of handsets in the world but in Argentina you can only buy the ones from companies who agreed to produce them here. That's why Samsung's are so popular, they signed the deal, they can basically take over the market.

If you are determined to buy an iPhone you have to buy one from Craigslist, OLX, MercadoLibre or any other dealer you can find. Note: There are no authorized dealers of iPhones here. They are all brought in from abroad purchased unlocked from other sources.

Hi Tom. There's one posted by a user on the forum in the classifieds. http://baexpats.org/classifieds/item/826-iphone-5s-32g-unlocked-sealed-us850/

Wouldn't be surprised if he's already sold it, though.

Thanks everyone, we did order one and friends are carrying it down next week.

Nancy
