Bajo_cero2 and I might not agree on much but we do agree that people should pay their taxes. The national pastime of Argentina is not football nor tango. It is figuring out how to scam the system and not pay if you don't have to. Many of us do it in one way or another and in one degree or another. We bring in items from overseas (for resale or personal use) and get through customs without paying duty because we have a US Passport. We bring in Dollars through cuevas. We do some / all of our work under the table, etc etc.
We can't then throw a hissy fit when the government tries to stop these activities. In my opinion this regulation is another way for the government to check to see if you are paying your taxes but there is another reason as well...
This government is hard-pressed for Dollars. When you pay for that A&F shirt on the internet you are probably paying for it with your Argentine credit card (if you are smart). Why? Because you are "changing" your Pesos for Dollars at less than the blue rate. I think this drops central reserves but I don't remember the exact mechanism. Someone else can chime in. We should not be surprised at more attempts to control capital flight.
Please note - my comments are not an attempt to excuse either 1) Hypocrisy by a government that says you should do one thing and then does just the opposite themselves, 2) another failed attempt at controlling demand-side economics, or 3) the loss of liberties that many of us take for granted or compare to some other country.
I really can't complain about living in Argentina. I like it here. Yes, there are some things that are a pia (like more govt controls) but the quality of life we have here at the price is really hard to beat (IMO).
