Owning vehicle BA

Take into account that you can save yourself some good money when you buy an older used car with few kilometers and if it is older than 10 years , your registration costs (patente) drop very dramatically, also insurance is cheaper but not by much .
When you buy new , registration( patentamiento) can be costly too, something that is by passed when you buy used since it's already registred and the cost of transfer of ownership(transferencia) is less than registring and brand new car.
If i were you, i'd stay away from imported cars (new or used) and find something that locals drive ( fiat, vw, renault, peugeot etc)
I'd check out mercado libre since a lot of the prices are in US dollars to get an idea of what's out there.
Good luck to you, Pilgrim👍

Fifteen years ago, I bought a 16 year old Peugeot 405gl 1.6 and I am still driving it. It's the "modelo nacional" (made in Argentina) and replacement parts are readily available.

As far as I know, vehicles that have more than ten years are only eligible for what I remember as what was and still my be known as "comprehensive" insurance in the USA.

So, as far as I know, "collision" coverage is not offered in Argentina for vehicles over ten years. If the driver of the insured vehilce is responsible for an accident, the insurance company will not pay for the damages to the owner's vehicle, but will pay for the damages to another vehicle as well as for injuries to the driver and passengers of the other vehicle, as well as anyone else who is injured in the accident, hopefully, including the driver and any passemgers in the insured vehicle, but I am not 100% certain.

In any case, this type of policy is called "responsabilidad civil" and additional coverage, depending on the age of the vehicle, that covers loss from fire, theft, robbery of the tires ir the entire vehicle, as well as breakage to glass, damage to the door locks and from hail may also be available. I think the word "global" or "universal" applies to this level of coverage, but I am not certain.

I know this coverage (which also includes emergency/roadside assistance) would not be available for my car if I applied for a new policy today, but I have had the policy with this coverage for 15 years. Although the monthly premiums and the level in pesos of coverage have changed, the coverage itself has not

The monthly premiums recently increased from $5.000 to $35.000 pesos per month. I asked my insurance agent about the current monthly cost of responsabilidad civil. It's now $25.000. With $350.000 coverage for the total loss of the vehicle, as well as the additional coverage, I will gladly continue with the policy I already have.

The cost to register "patentar" a new vehicle is about 15% of the purchase price; the cost to transfer a used vehicle into your name is about 6% (in CABA) of the cars value (as assigned by the ARCA).

If I remember correctly, when I bought the sixteen year old 405 I was told that I would not have to pay the annual gee for patentes.

Nonetheless, I recieved a bill for the patentes for several years. The amount was not significant, so I just paid the fee. I haven't recieved a bill for the patentes in at least ten years.

After ten years, you only pay municipal patente which is very cheap , after 30 years you pay nothing lol , i tried to pay municipal on my 1993 cherokee and that's what they told me.
