Owning vehicle BA

Thanks for the info here. Does this apply to care leasing too?
There is no such thing as car leasing down here. You may only purchase the car (generally 100% payment up front). Keep in mind car values are quite high right now due to the overvalued peso. An entry level compact sedan will likely be over $20k.

Owning a car down here is a big deal and a major milestone in Argentine culture. It takes years to save up or a 0 km.

Leasing is uncommon but not totally unheard of. Toyota has a leasing program though a subsidiary/partner.

How "relatively" expensive a vehicle is really depends upon the model. A new Toyota Corolla starts an about $27,500 USD (base model, automatic transmission) and goes up to $33,500 for a fully loaded model. Keep in mind if you pay cash and have a business you can request a "factura A" and get the 21% IVA back as a tax credit. So that's less than $22k USD net for a base model or $26,500 USD net for a fully loaded one, which is the same or cheaper than a Corolla in the USA. Keep in mind that pickup trucks only pay 10.5% IVA.

Great tip on the "factura A".

I bought a Cronos in 2023 for $16,000, the highest trim model they had available. The same Cronos now costs $23,475. A 47% increase.

That being said, it's a been a great car so far.

Well, that is interesting, it would work for monotributistas as well?

Unfortunately it does not work if you are within the A-K categories of Monotributo (monotributistas do not pay a separate IVA tax, they pay a single unified tax that covers all their fiscal obligations). You have to be in the "responsable inscripto" category which is where self employed people go when they exceed the maximum amount permitted in the highest category (K) of Monotributo. Of course SAs and SRLs also pay IVA and thus can emit Factura A.

I tried several times to get this to work but it did not accept any of my foreign credit cards, seems you have to have an Argentine credit card. I don't suppose any banks will issue credit cards to folks without DNI?

Your best bet is renting a car for short term stays or until you get a CDI to purchase one outright.
