What should one ask for at the pharmacy to clear up a little urinary tract infection? I've been scouring the local supermarkets near me for cranberry juice, but have turned up short.

Pop by the pharmacy and tell them you have a UTI (or ITU here - infección del tracto urinario). They'll probably give you a suppository.

If you find cranberry juice, let me know! I've never seen it sold down here.

Guys, I saw cranberry supplements at a dietetica just the other day (in case anybody is interested it was www.dieteticamirasoles.com.ar and they have sucursales in Flores and Plaermo and deliver!). I was very excited to know it can be found here (as someone who used to suffer from chronic UTIs I never travel without it or acidophilis). I have seen lots of cranberry juice for sale at Jumbo in the past (Ocean Spray) but haven't looked recently. Even if you can't find it, they sell at pharmacies a version of liquid acidophilis in ampoules that you break open and drink--if you can't find the cranberry, at the very least definitely do the liquid acidophilus. Good luck!!

ok awesome!! Of course my first one hits me while in another country. Go figure!

Hate to say I`m a bit of a gloom monger on this subject as I ended up hospitalized with a nasty kidney infection in December when the UTI turned ugly. I too had foolishly thought the local pharmacy would have something to help like those fabulous Cystopurin sachets they sell in Europe. I was given some blue tablets by the pharmacist --which turned the wee blue but did little more...my husband was also making me cucumber juice on demand..a natural remedy that is supposed to help.
All in all I`d say try the pharmacist but head to the dr for antibiotics if it doesnt clear after a week...betetr safe than sorry!

Ocean Spray has something like 15% juice and with the sugar that makes up the rest it can actually make your UTI worse...thanks for the tip on liquid acidophilis in ampoules ..Im heading to look after work!

True that the Ocean Spray can hardly qualify as Juice (although cranberry juice is so potent and generally bitter that I have rarely seen it--certainly not here!--for sale in more pure quantities) and that excess sugar can be bad for the UTI. For me it's all about cranberry supplements, acidophilis (in natural yogurt too), and LOTS of water. I hate those pesky UTIs. Hope you have luck with the acidophilis!!

I also agree to go see a doctor if it doesn't clear up within even a couple of days! Can turn nasty on you. Alternately, once when I was in Uruguay I got an UTI and since I hadn't traveled with my usual supplements my boyfriend went to the pharmacy and I ended up getting an antibiotic for UTIs that actually worked pretty well. I only take antibiotics in case of emergency, and usually with the UTIs you can catch them early enough and cure with "home remedys"

Ladies,

Any of you (former) UTI victims free tonight and want to grab a drink? I know lots of girls who've had lots of UTIs and would love to cause... er, meet some more.

Holler at me!

John

The ocean spray isn't great unless you can find the unsweetened.

However drinking a lot of fluids during a UTI at least helps because you need to empty your bladder more frequently, which aids in curbing the amount of bacterial growth possible.

Unfortunately, once you've had one UTI you can be more susceptible to them again. However, once you've had one, you'll never forget it, and at least the next time you'll know immediately when it starts to come on again. Believe me, I had one when I was about 17 and didn't have another for about 13 years, and I immediately recognised the sensation...

Drink plenty of fluids, avoid caffeine and alcohol for the next few days. Drinking fluids also helps you just mentally, because when you have that horrid sensation of needing to go, you can actually pass some fluids.
