Peso Shortage

This Friday I was with a couple of American girls who had to go to about 3 or 4 banks before they found one with money.

It was a bit embarrassing.

That's a normal Friday afternoon though. And it's not new. At least not around where I live. Friday night around 4 they refill the machines. You need to go at 4:15/4:30 Friday.

They have been printing new 100$ notes as there has been a shortage around the end of the year (I already had some new ones ;)). It seems that at the end of the year a lot of people get cash to buy presents, and to travel (in january). At least, that's what they say.

I haven't had any problems yet. Not in an ATM machine nor at an exchange office.

i went to one ATM yesterday that didn't have money. the next one did. other than that i haven't noticed any problems, but the shortage of banknotes (real or not) has been on the front pages of various papers in recent days.

There are quite many problems at ATMs, both in Capital & in Provincia, both for small & big bills.

A bill printing machine broke down at the central bank (or wherever it is located).
They even have pesos printed in Brazil !

But every 2 to 3 ATMs you'll end up finding bills.

The government will print over 3 billion pesos in 100 pesos bills in the next weeks. There is a terrible inflation problem that will see the 100 peso bill very shortly like a US $ 10 bill in the USA .

Apparently the 100 peso bill is used in over 80 percent of transactions now.

They should have 200 and 500 peso bills minimum .

Guys there are serious peso shortages causing 1 hour + queues across Bsas province...Caballito is really bad too and we have all but given up looking in the banks here since last week and head to micro center for cash...everything in this country is unequal including the shortages it seems

The brazilian made bills must be really horrible for cashiers or anybody who recieves these bills from other places than ATMs.
They are quite different from the normal ones (i.e. paper feels different, serial number is printed differently), very confusing.

Anyway, with all the inflation they had for so many years, it is quite ridiciolous that they don't introduce 500 and 1000 peso bills. That would solve a lot of problems. My wallet has never been as bulky as here. Tried about 10 different ATMs today, only two had money (and 2hr+ queues). One should not put money asside when the currency has 30%+ inflation, I am glad I did it nevertheless.

On TV they said the issue should be resolved within the day. I'd like to believe them but I can't. Only fact I know about is that the last shippment of brazil-made 100-AR$-bills arrived, which indeed should help a bit.

Wow. I'm really surprised that the shortage is still going on. I've had no problems getting cash since Xmas. And I go quite often I don't take out a lot at time. Well, ignore my "news from Mini's bubble". Stock up on cash!

(1) I would like to have your problems.

(2) If I'm worried about breaking a AR$100 bill, just think what life will be like trying to break a AR$200 bill, much less a AR$500 or AR$1,000 bill.

(3) I still want to have your bulky wallet problem.
