Thanks. They changed the front door locks right away. We were thinking of asking the landlord to install a second stronger lock on our door.
Was the lock changed before or after the second robbery?
If your landlord doesn't want to install a second lock on your door, suggest splitting the cost. If you have to pay for it yourself, a locksmith will charge around $400 pesos to install a high-security lock - not a bad investment to feel a bit more comfortable. Unless you're specifically targeted because a thief knows the contents of your home, any thief will pick the door that's easiest to break down, which will be the one with the single cheap lock on it.
If I were scared of an imminent robbery, I would add a good lock, post an alarm sticker (with or without actually installing an alarm), AND obtain insurance.
Despite what other posts imply, renter's policies are cheap here. You select the amount of deductible vs the premium you're willing to pay. Among other things, you would also get coverage for
responsibilidad civil (liability in the US) to cover you in the event of an accident or injury to a guest or employee in your home. As "wealthy foreigners," we're easy targets for sock-it-to-'em juicios.
