Quality Argentine Products

the CRV is imported from the US i think? that could explain the cost of that particular model. i remember looking at honda prices here once and laughed at the price of some of them.

My experience is from this process (in no way i am a car expert): here in Argentina the car models available are quite limited. If you want to take advantage of the situation now, the options are even smaller. Currently especially VW, Chevrolet and Ford are pushing hard. Other companies seem to prefer to wait until the situation is more stable (first we wanted a Honda)... And as I mentioned, as soon as the luxury tax kicks in (probably after around 1.8m end user price), you pay 25% more.
Most of the dealers we were in touch with: pesos in cash. And you have to pay within 2 or 3 working days after signing the contract.

For special offers see also here (not included are patentamiento costs): https://www.karvi.com.ar/offers
Can you write about the paper work part?

The HR-V mini SUV was made in Argentina, in their factory in Campana, although I believe they recently stopped production, and are now just making motorcycles there. So it may be cheaper than the imported Hondas.

My RAV4 was made in Japan. In the USA it is a very pedestrian model, here considered a luxury car.

I got it at Sarthou Automotores, a local Toyota dealer with excellent reputation. They are professional people, and the service department is quite good. Had an Honda CRV before, and both the car and the dealer were very disappointing.

We havent received the car yet. And my wife did the process. What i can say: there was a contract sent to us. We had to do the down payment (probably 30k pesos by bank transfer). Then a few days laters she went there with a bag full of pesos, gave the money, signed the contract. A few days later a courier came by yo get signatures for the patentamiento.

Again, in our case the licensing /patentamiento is included in the price. A lot of the dealers dont do that.

So in theory the paperwork is almost non-existent in our case, we expect to get the car soon (as it is one of the biggest VW dealers here, i am not worried; but lets see).

We were specifically looking into this model. It is hardly available and certainly not as cheap as others. My understanding was that they are still being produced here (Cordoba?), but that the production will stop by the end of the year here in Argentina.

The only Honda that was made in Argentina recently was the HR-V, which was made at their Campana factory, which is in BA Provincia. I dont know how many they made there- its quite possible that they also imported the same model from other countries as well. Hondas, globally, are never cheap, and they seldom discount much. Argentina still makes some cars- 2019 was down to 314,000 , while they almost hit 500,000 in 2018. And many are exported- a quarter of a million of those 314,000 were exported last year. Its a big foreign exchange cash earner. Mostly to Brazil.

How many of the non luxury models could make a trip across argentina without falling into a pozo never to be seen again?

I want to get something so wife and I can travel around argentina. I want something that can get out of it's own way and take a pothole without exploding. Am I only looking at SW4 or hilux here? If I buy a hilux truck is that a luxury car?

I dont have the stats, but to me it looks that Argentina is importing far more cars than exporting. Most of the cars we were looking at are made in Brazil. So on a net basis i dont think it is a cash earner

A HILUX is a great choice. According to the papers you can buy one now for around US$16,000, at the blue rate. Also considered a luxury car here, but popular with rural producers so there are parts and mechanics available throughout Argentina.

Pretty much the same with the SW4, which is a HILUX chassis and engine with a car cabin on top. It rides like a truck, but the advantage is that it has a trunk to hide (safely ????) suitcases and packages.

Both made in Argentina, so tags and insurance are lower than for imported cars.
