Hi everyone!
I'm a newcomer on this forum and planning my move to BA in early July. I've been looking a lot on compartodepto to rent a room, which of course I won't make a commitment on until visiting the places! But I wondered if anyone could tell me if the neighborhood Balvanera Rincón is safe for a young girl (22) traveling alone. I speak Spanish, if that makes a difference (probably doesn't). I found a good apartment listing in this area, I think. In thinking of where to live, I think I would rate Palermo Soho first, maybe San Telmo or Villa Crespo? Again this is very hypothetical, but what do you all think is the best place for me to live? I kind of want to avoid Recoleta, even though it's probably the safest.
Thanks! I'm so excited to get to know everyone on this forum, and maybe in real life when I get to BA. :)

Presumably you mean on Rincón street, in the barrio of Balvanera, which is near the Congreso Nacional. I used to live in the area, many years ago, and now find it a little depressing. Can't really say whether it's dangerous or not. Rincón and what?

If your looks don't allow you to completely blend in, I stay clear of the area.

Just ignoring safety for the moment: it's a boring part of town. And 'town' is extremely big, so you'll have to choose carefully. Just book a hotel for a couple of days and go and take a look in various neighbourhoods. Think carefully about what attracts you in an area. San Telmo, for example, has a nice historic feel, but may be a less bit advisable for young women at dark than Palermo or Recoleta. Palermo may come accross as a bit too watered-down, not authentic enough, I personally do not really like the part of Palermo you are referring to. Places like Villa Crespo are definitely safe but you may feel a bit isolated over there. Recoleta is pretty much the same as Palermo, in my view (as far as the 'popular', superficial feel is concerned). I enjoyed living in Barracas and Boedo but at that point I already knew the city well. You are intelligent enough to choose a nice area once you are there. Many options should be fine, but just stay away from La Boca!

Agree with others. Rincon is Balvanera/Congreso, in general not a nice place to be around during the evening.

Even tough you have misconceptions about Recoleta I recommend the Recoleta Petite Hostel on Uriburu half a block from Av, Santa Fe. Spend there a few nights before you get your bearings . Single Room shared bath $175 per night , about $20 US , Shared room $80 per night , say US$10....!!

Personally, I find Recoleta boring.
